Default Need to get rid of hiccups

Okay, my son (age 11) has had the hiccups for over an hour now and we have tried EVERYTHING to get rid of them. Holding breath, drinking, breathing in a bag - nothing is working. He says they are getting painful and he is having a little trouble breathing, nothing as serious as his asthma attacks, but some trouble. Does anyone know of any secrets to help get rid of hiccups. I am afraid our pediatrician will laugh at me if I call him.

Dont take this personally but scare the poop outta him, my daughter had the hiccups for about an hour and I scared her and they went away. I hope he gets rid of them soon though.

Call the doctor (if he laughs--change doctors--immediately). A child with asthma who has hiccups for that length of time is an asthma attack waiting to happen.

    I'm speaking from experience.

I have put a call in to the doc, we are going on 3 hours now. While I am waiting for his return call, I am going to try and scare him also.
Thanks for the advise!!! I will let you know how it goes. I worry too much about this one and his health, lately his heart rate has been staying at 110-120 and these hiccups on top of it can't be good. Let's hope they go away soon!!!!

The hiccups finally stopped and within minutes he fell asleep. Thanks so much for the advise, better than what my pediatrician's nurse said, which was NOTHING!!! She never returned the call. I plan to handle that situation Monday am.
Again, thanks!! I now a couple of more ways to get rid of them the next time this happens.

I always give my kids a teaspoon of sugar, the whole spoonful at once. It works on them. I have also heard a teaspoon of peanut butter works. Just some ideas for next time. Glad they have vanished for now.

That makes me really angry. Please let us know how the call goes on Monday.

I wouldn't try the peanut butter cure--I'd be worried about choking if the peanut butter got stuck mid-hiccup. I'd never heard the sugar cure. I'll remember that one.

I always use 11 sips of water in a row. That works for me everytime without fail, so that's what I use. Sounds like the pediatric nurse needs a bit of a talking to. I'm glad that the hiccups went away eventually, it must have been exhausting for him.

I have used the sugar one too. and also, if he'll hold his mouth open you can rub the roof of his mouth gently with a plain dry q-tip while he breathes normally through his nose. It always works for us. Even when i have the hiccups i do it to myself, works everytime

Just for the next case of them try a tbls. of vinegar. It always works here it must be along the same line of sugar. Super sweet and super sour.

I find that everytime I eat something that is a little bit hard to swallow I get the hiccups. They get pretty violent and yes, can be very tiring. I discovered the way to get rid of them was to again eat something that is hard to swallow. It always works. Hiccups are so weird. My DD would get them, as a baby, every time I put her in her baby swing. Needless to say she didn't use the swing much. I am glad your son's hiccups went away.
