what would cause one ankle to swell....any ideas?
It is weird , I went to badminton last week and put on my sneakers and when I stood up....that is all I did , I noticed my ankle was a bit sore but I never really gave it another thought. a couple of nights later it was bothering me still so I finally looked at it and it is swollen on the left foot but the ankle on the right side.....you would think that I would have noticed when showering but I never paid attention to it. The ankle on my right foot is fine.
I don't think I am retaining fluid as it didn't leave an indent when I pushed in on the skin . I am waiting for bloodwork to come in that I had taken for a different problem so I was going to make an appointment for next week (it is a week tonight since my ankle bothered me) but tonight I looked and it is weird....before the swelling was from my ankle down to the bottom of my foot but tonight it is now swelling about 2 inches as well above my ankle. It swells quite a bit through the day having the most swelling at night but I wake up with it still swollen in the mornings. So I am going to see if I can get an appointment to see my dr. tomorrow if not I am hoping they can fit me in for wednesday as I know they are very busy.
Anyone have any ideas what "might" or could "possibly" cause something like this? I have never heard tell of this as I thought if you were say retaining fluid etc it would affect both ankles/feet. I don't even have any bruising or anything.Dh was a medic in the military for 20 plus years and he said that he has never seen that before, he is totally baffled.Starting Totally Over. How painful is it? Can you put weight on it? Is the skin tender or sensitive to touch?

Well, I was thinking it might be gout, but usually that is extremely painful. It's really hard to say what it could be. You could have even been bitten by a small spider or ant. Some people react differently to such bites. Did you try taking a strong anti-histamine (Benadryl) to see if that helps with the swelling?
Does diabetes run in your family? Have you ever been evaluated for that?

My left ankle and foot swell a good bit of the time, but I am a diabetic with severe neuropathy. I have no feeling all the way up to my calves. Mine is because of poor circulation. If I stand too much or sit too long in a chair with my knees bent it swells. I prop my leg up on pillows overnight when it happens and by morning it is usually fine.
I hope your doctor is able to get you in. Do you think you may have twisted it or stepped wrong?
Please let us know what the doc says!!! Saying an extra prayer and sending hugs your way!!!DD (19)

I am waiting for bloodwork to come in, maybe in another week. I think that my thyroid is all awry again. My dr. said that she was also having my bloodwork tested for diabetes......my mother is diabetic. I did ask my mom if she ever had anything like this and she said no, although not all people get the same symptoms for the same health problems . Interesting, thanks for the thought
. I can't imagine the thyroid gland doing that but you never know I guess. It does have so many odd symptoms although I don't think that I have seen swelling of the ankle from thyroid problems.

Well right now my left ankle is swollen its been like this since Aug. I've had tests for blood clots and a broken ankle. It is not either of them...... My Dr says its swelling to swell. I guess when I see her in Nov I'll ask her about it again. Yes it still hurts.........
FernYes I'm out of my mind. It's a dark and scary place in there.

WOW, that is a long time to have that
I wonder what it is from? I don't think that I broke or sprained mine as it doesn't hurt to walk on....just tender when I touch it, well a little achy too but it isn't even discoloured. I think a blood clot would also be painful........I sure hope they find out what is going on with yours, that is just terrible to go that long

Thyroid???
Bee,
I noticed you quoted me...yes, diabetes may be a cause (poor circulation), but you keep mentioning thyroid. I didn't mention the thyroid. Another possibility I mentioned was GOUT. Maybe you were thinking goiter??? Gout has more to do with diet...
Anyway, GOUT is caused by excess uric acid crystals in the blood which eventually collect in joints causing great pain. This can be diagnosed via urinalysis as these crystals appear there as well. The treatment is a 7-14 day course of allopurinol.
You might want to ask your DR. if they checked you for Gout.

Sorry about that
, I have had problems with hyperthyroidism in the past....I have been getting symptoms for this again so I am waiting for the test results on that as well as diabetes.
I don't think it is gout, but maybe.....I didn't call my dr. to make an appointment today because this morning my ankle was still swollen but not as much as before so I thought I was on the mend and when I touched my ankle it actually hurt a bit opposed to just being tender so dh thought that maybe I bumped my ankle bone and bruised it last week although as i mentioned there is no bruise at least not on the outside. Now it is back to the way it has been and I spent the day elevating it but it didn't matter......I am just baffled
Guess I will be making that appointment with the dr. after all.
Thanks
