Hi there,
While I have NOT had gastric bypass I had a friend who went through that but did the rubber band thingy, it's were there is no surgery but they put a rubber band around the stomach so in turn making it so you eat less and lose weight, it might be something to look into, I've also heard it's alot cheaper. Good luck in whatever you decide.

I have not had this procedure but I do know several people who have. They have all lost 100+ pounds. Four of the women that had it done seem to be doing great. Another woman gained her weight back, but she began to eat more than she was supposed to. Another woman has had some problems with hers. Her body is not absorbing the nutrients it needs. She is getting iron shots at the moment. And I know one man who has had it done. I don't know him very well to know if he has had any problems, but he looks great. So, out of the seven folks I know who have had this procedure, only one of the women has had any medical problems.
I am sure this is a very difficult decision to make. Good luck to you.Last edited by emily_hope; 04-15-2007 at 06:17 PM.

A friend of mine had it 5 years ago (she's 25 now) and she swears that it's the best thing that she's done. Yes, there is extra skin but she said that she's getting most of it removed (plastic surgery) in a few years. Total she lost 220lbs... but, the only drawback she said is that the rapid weight loss caused a heart condition and she's now on heart meds for the rest of her life. But the way she looks at it is that the slew of other health problems that she had are now gone and she only has the one... it's one of those options that need to be weighed.
But she swear upside down and backwards that it's the best decision for her life and health that she's ever made. Her doctor says that now she's in the clear of having a high risk pregnancy (when she does get pregnant) which is a plus because she's ready to start trying. They were telling her that if she had babies while she was 370lbs that she would most likely be hospital ridden for the entire pregnancy-- if she was able to conceive at all.

I too have thought about the gastric band surgery. However, my health insurance does not cover it.
A former co-worker of mine had gastic bypass surgery about 10 years ago. She did really well after her body adjusted to the size of her new stomach. She was hospitalized once right after surgery for dehydration but they gave her IV fluids and she was fine. She lost about 125 pounds in about 8 months. Didn't have too much problem with excess skin because she was really good about exercising. After she left the company, she went on to marry her high school sweetheart. About 2 years she gave birth to her daughter. About 1 1/2 years later she became pregnant with her son. Unfortunately tragedy struck and she and her unborn child were killed in a car-semi accident. I remember frequently how her weight loss success and as a wife, mother and mother-to-be was quashed by a negligent semi driver.Kim

I have not had this surgery but if I were extremely overweight I'd do it in a heartbeat provided my insurance would cover it. I say go for it. Hopefully you will hear from some people who have had the surgery. Have you thought about posting this question on the sister site Weight Loss Moms? I'd bet you could find someone there who knows a lot about it.

My mom had it done in late January. She's doing great. She's lost about 50 lbs. She still has a hard time getting up and around b/c she has lots of knee/hip problems. She's glad she had it done.
