IUD
So I was thinking of getting a tubal. When I started discussing it, they asked if I ever thought of a IUD. I am only 27 and have three children. I have a lot of years ahead of me. Where I might want to have one more. So has anyone had one or have any negative or positive experience with them. I can either get a 5 or 10 year IUD. Both of which can be removed before hand. It also will only require a doctors visit and no actual surgery. Major plus for me. I asked how reliable they where. She said that they are considered better then a actual tubal. Does anyone know about that? I also like the fact that it is easily removed. Compared to a reversal.
Just looking for some add info and hopefully some 1st hand knowledge.

My Sister had an IUD and she wound up getting pregnant and when they went to remove the IUD it killed her Fetus. She quite a bit older than me so their may be different medical practices now.

I just had a 10 year IUD removed in January. I had no problems with it at all. The only thing for me was that I felt a lot of pressure when they were inserting it. Other than that not one problem for 10 years. Removal is quick and painless.

I had the Mirena for 18 months and then I started having problems with it. Somehow it moved in me and quickly became very painful. At the same time I discovered that with an IUD you can get a fertilized egg, but that egg is not able to implant (in most cases) and I consider that to be aborting a baby, so not only was the pain an issue for me, but also the moral side of it as well. I was not told that information before I had it inserted.
The procedure itself was easy and relatively painless. I cramped for 3 solid days after having it put in. I did not have a menstrual cycle for those eighteen months. My cycle started up again immediately after having it removed and two months later I got pregnant.
Personally, for me, now that I know what I know, I am against the use of the IUD, but it was an effect form of B/C and I didn't have to think about it everyday. It didn't have the high dosage of hormones that really cause issues for me (think "wicked witch of the west"....lol) so that was good.
After this baby I'll be 26 and have 3 kids and we'll be done, so hubby is getting "fixed":surprise:

I had one eons ago. I had no children when I had it put in and hurt like a sonofagun. But they say if you've had a baby it's not so bad. I ended up having mine out b/c I got pregnant and then I miscarried. Anyway, I know they're much improved now. I think I'd consider it over a tubal. I had one of those and had major problems b/c of it.

I had one put in a few months after the birth of my 4th child, in May 2005. It hurt a bit going in, but only for about 30 seconds. I had some spotting for a few days. I always had a problem finding the strings, but my Gyn would give me a quick ultrasound and it was still there every time.
So fast forward to July 2006. I was 3 weeks late for AF. I took a pregnancy test and it was positive!! DH and I were flabbergasted, but thrilled of course. I go in to my Ob/gyn and they do an ultrasound, find a little baby with a fabulous little heartbeat and the IUD is gone! Apparently they can fall out and you won't even know. I ended up having a miscarriage around 10 weeks, which may or may not have had anything to do with the IUD.
That was my 3rd miscarriage so when I had the D&C I also had a tubal ligation. I originally got the IUD because we were not sure if we were done having kids. I am breastfeeding so I wanted a non-hormonal birth control. But after having 3 miscarriages, I decided I couldn't risk having more. So that is why I had the tubal.
Long story- short: I can't say my experience with an IUD was a good one.Nicole, Mom of 4 ages 6-16~

The doc I worked for before I went to part time would never suggest IUD's to patients. When I asked her why, she said it went against her religous beliefs, she is pro ife. She then explained how an IUD works, it prevents the fertilized egg from implanting into the uteran wall. So, in essence, if you believe that life begins at conception, an IUD is a form of abortion. I had never thought of it like that, and have since found out that there are quite a few docs in our clinic that feel the same way.
This may or may not make a difference to you personally, just wanted to add it, as it was something I never thought of before.DJ

I had a copper IUD put in in February of 2004. I had a period 3 weeks out of the month and I hated it, so I had it removed. I'm contemplating a Mirena and I understand that the hormones are localized, so they only work with your reproductive system - not like bc pills. I believe the chances of a fertilized egg slipping by the Mirena are VERY, VERY small.
You can still deal with fertilized eggs with a copper iud, which was another reason I had it taken out.
I won't have a tubal - a close friend had one and her periods are 2 to 3 times worse now than before the tubal. I have bad periods already, so I don't need any outside help!
Good luck!

I don't know a thing about the IUD, but I do know that I renigged on my DH after DS was born. I was supposed to get a tubal ligation, but I really didn't want to . The day of the procedure," I told my DH I am only 28 years old, and this procedure is serious for someone who doesn't know for sure if they want it, and it is a personal decision for me. I am too young to make such a permanent decision. Anything could happen in the future, so if you know that you NEVER want anymore kids EVER, then you(DH) can get the vasectomy!!!" He was a bit upset with me, but I really didn't care at that point, and when DS was only 4 months old, he did get the procedure done.

I have the Paraguard IUD that is good for 10 years. I have had it for 5 years so far, and have had no complaints. The insertion was pretty painless, and simple. I have had no complications, and its still in tact. I will be getting it removed when the time is up, and will be getting another one if possible unless my dh has had a V by then.
I would recommend one to anyone wanting non permanent protection without having to take a pill or shot.
