    Default trouble after a colonoscapy?

Dh had his first one yesterday. things went ok, then after about an hour of him being home he got short of breath, started chilling real bad( he was shaking the bed ) and he spiked a temp. i called the dr who did it and they said to get him to the er. took him in there and his temp continued to raise. they did blood work, x rays, and a pee test. his white blood count was high . the er dr said that this was not normal. when i asked what was wrong he stated that some bacteria must have gotton in his blood stream during the colonoscapy. has anyone ever heard of this? we are both home today but he is much better, they started him on 2 antibiotics, he has a follow up today

By the way, I see you're from NE, my sis is an ER nurse at Clarkson. She bounces between there and the NICU.

    Glad he's better.

I've never heard of this either.

I've had two done and never had any problems except excess gas.

Now, I'm not looking forward to the next one. Maybe I'll be lucky and they won't do one for a while yet.

I have heard of troubles after colonoscopies. It is rare but they do mention it as a complication before you go in. You can sometimes have a small puncure. But that sounds a bit sudden to also cause the shortness of breath and chills, I don't think is a normal complication. I just read the records so not really qualified to give an opinion, so check with the physician and ask exactly what is the complication and when he thinks it happened. Is an infection causing the chills and shortness of breath and when did it happen. I would also worry about an embolism causing the shortness of breath. I hope he went right away to the hospital . It might not even be the procedure but just some bad timing.

Oh dear, I wish I hadn't read this. My dh is scheduled for another colonoscopy in early December in Nebraska. The whole thing really scares me anyway.

I had a colonoscopy and would go in for another. The complication rate is low. It can save your life. Colon CA is one of the most preventable cancers with early detection and polyp removal.

I have had a barium enema exam and a colonoscopy recently. Neither is comfortable, but I can't say I remember that as a complication on the sheet. Is it possible he already had the bacterial infection, and the colonoscopy exacerbated it? Poor guy, hope he's 100% again real soon.
