MRSA
My teenage daughter is home sick from school for the 3rd day. She is being tested for MRSA. The doctor says it isn't as big of a deal as the media is making it out to be.... but it's still upsetting. We thought it was a spider bite on Monday, by Tuesday it was a big swollen & open sore, right on her jawline. We have no idea where she got this, but it was probably at school. Her lab test should be back tomorrow. Does anyone know anything about MRSA, or can offer any advice? Thanks...
Good thing I like to clean... and with the holidays coming I was planning a good thorough house cleaning anyway.

It's scary, isn't it? And the media makes it even more frightening.
There are still antibiotics that will treat MRSA. Some antibiotics that they have used in the past are now resistant. And the elderly, the immune suppressed and those with life threatening chronic diseases will have a harder time fighting MRSA as opposed to a young, healthy individual.
But,I hope your DD does not have MRSA, keep us posted!
Keep cleaning, Mom!Bought my new oven 1/08 and loving it!
My recurrent nightmare is there is no such thing as PMS, and this is my real personality.

Keep her calm and cool about it, stress does NOT help the immune system. Also talk to the Dr. about keeping her stomach flora ok, I personally use yogurt with live cultures to prevent stomach/bowel upsets that go with antibiotics. The antibiotics go after the bad and the good stuff and sometimes REALLY upset the GI tract.
I use the yogurt for the horses too whenever they get any form of antibiotics, the last thing needed is the scoots to go with everything else going on!
Hugs to you, she's going to be FINE mom

MRSA is not new, like the media is representing. My SIL works as a viral biologist in a hospital. She told us they've had about 15 cases a month for the last 10 years.

I had MRSA when I was a teen, about 6 years ago. Yes, it sucks and the antibiotics are ridiculous to your body. Get her to eat lots and lots of yogurt everyday to replace good bacteria to prevent yeast infections, and drink lots of cranberry juice to prevent bladder infections as well as I found I had some bladder infections during my treatment (may not be related but that will help in case). I had it on my face just above my right eye, it wasn't fun but it is treatable. AVOID listening to media reports on it or looking it up on the internet, its only going to cause undue stress because they make it seems deadly. It only is if you have a comprimised immune system. Just do what the doctor says and you're daughter will be fine. Take care, I hope she gets better soon!

Well, dd's test came back positive for MRSA. Now I have to hope no one else in the family catches it, including ME, who is just a ~little bit busy~ this time of year! The good news... the antibiotic is working, and she is getting better. Other than the nasty boil, she really wasn't that ill. I guess the key thing with MRSA is catching it early.
I did find out from some older kids that the school is having a lot of kids with this, and they've starting scrubbing down the bathrooms & gym lockers with bleach. Yuck!

If it's MRSA she'll most likely be treated with IV vanco and ITA with everyone about keeping her stomach flora in good health - cut sugar and processed foods, caffeine too! Plan yougurt, plain kefir, real sauerkraut and kimchi, kombucha all are good sources of probiotics.

Fern, I didn't realize it could be a chronic thing. Does anyone else in your family have it also? Do you have to take antibiotics every time you have a flare up?
Thank you...
