    Default Article: Sugary Sweet Beauty

In the self-care and beauty industry, the latest craze is including sugar in skin care products. If you search the internet you will find everything from sugar body scrubs to sugar hair removers. The prices can range from $8.00 to $35.00 for each product. How's that for a product in which the main ingredient can cost you a no more that $3.00 for a 5 pound bag!

To enjoy all of the benefits of a sugar based product without shelling out the big bucks, trys these recipes:

    Orange Cream Sugar Body Scrub

This recipe is great to remove dead skin and give your skin a healthy glow. The sugar contains glycolic acid and the cream is a source for lactic acid. Avoid irritated or broken skin areas.

    Ingredients:
    ½ cup sugar
2 TBSP cream or whole milk
    5 drops orange oil
1 cup olive, jojoba, or almond oil

Mix sugar, oil and cream together. Add orange oil after main ingredients are completely mixed.

Apply to your body by starting at the feet and working your way up. Massage in a circular motion and leave it on for 10-15 minutes, then shower it off. This recipe is enough to make one full body treatment.

    Lemon Head Sugar Body Scrub

This recipe is both cleansing and detoxifying. Lemon is very detoxifying to the body and will also help brighten the skin.

    Ingredients:
    ½ cup sugar
    10 drops lemon oil
or ½ a lemon freshly squeezed
1 cup olive, jojoba, or almond oil

Mix all ingredients together. Apply to your body by starting at the feet and working your way up. Massage in a circular motion, then shower it off. This recipe is enough to make one full body treatment.

    Facial Cleanser

    Ingredients:

    White or brown sugar
    Your favorite facial cleanser
    Witch hazel
    Water

Using your favorite daily facial soap, an easy, inexpensive facial scrub can be made by adding sugar. Simply add a teaspoon of either white sugar or brown sugar and massage it gently on your facial skin. Rinse with cool water and spritz your face with a ½ witch hazel and ½ water mixture.

Sugar is a natural and inexpensive way to include alpha-hydroxy acids in your skincare program. It produces glycolic acid, an alpha hydroxy acid, which is included in many skincare product lines. Today's pricey beauty products that include sugar or alpha hydroxy acid, can be created inexpensively right at your kitchen table. You will experience all of the benefits without the inflated price.

Default 5 Beauty Aids You'll Never Find in the Cosmetics Aisle

The following ideas were taken from the book Vinegar, Duct Tape, Milk Jugs & More by Earl Proulx ~

1- Tea bags. The tannin in tea is an effective astringent. Wipe a damp tea bag over your face to tone your skin.

2- Oatmeal-honey mix. Grind 2 tablespoons of dry oats in your blender, then add 2 tablespoons of honey to make a facial wash. Massage it in, the rinse if off. Oatmeal acts as a sloughing agent, scrubbin away dead skin.

3- Eggs. They make a wonderful facial mask for dry & oily skin. Break an egg, separate the yolk & white, and beat each gently. Spread the yolk on dry skin (it will moisturize) & the white on oily areas (it will tighten)

4- Salt, especially sea salt. Keep a small plastic container in your shower & sprinkle a wee bit into your wet hands. A mild abrasive, salt is a terrific body & facial scrub.

5- Milk. Out of makeup remover? Fear not. If you have some powdered milk, you can use that instead. Place 3 tablespoons of powdered milk in a jar with about 1/3 cup warm water, screw on the lid, shake well. The mixture should be the consistency of heavy cream. To use it, wipe it on with a facecloth, then wipe it off & rinse with water.

Thanks for the tips. I've got some tea brewing right now, I'll be sure and save the bags.

This is the neatest book - I found it at the local library - check it out if you can

There are tips for the entire house - many things we already know, a few we may not - but it's well put together & grouped by "area" of the house -

And it's got little "inside stories" about different things - such as the history of bleach, the history of margarine, etc. ((useless trivia really, but fun))

Thanks for the tips. I've only used the tea bags for dark circles or puffy eyes. I will have to try that.
I use vinegar as a stringent for my face. Stinks but works well.

Default Five All Natural Beauty Aids

    Five All Natural Beauty Aids

Not everything you use to enhance your appearance has to come from a bottle or box.How often do you go all-natural? Did you know you can freshen up your looks with fresh fruits and other grocery store goodies? Some of the most effective tools for improving your looks -- from the texture of your hair to the appearance of your skin -- can be found at the local farmers' market. We’re talking about fruits that are just as good for your outside as they are for your inside. Here are top secret tips for enjoying natural beauty. These tips not only make great sense, but they also can save you plenty of dollars.

    1. Squeeze an orange and, using your fingers, pat the liquid on your face. The juice will evaporate quickly and leave you with a radiant glow. Plus you'll have the benefits of the antioxidant vitamin C.

    2. Mash half a banana and rub it into patches of dry skin. Leave it on for 5 minutes, then rinse well. Your skin will be baby soft. BONUS: the potassium in the banana will help erase the dark circles under your eyes.

    3. Snip off the foot section from an old pair of pantyhose and fill with one cup uncooked oatmeal. Now carefully tie the "oatmeal foot" to the faucet of your tub (you want the water to run through the oatmeal). Now fill the tub and soak away your dry, itchy skin.

    4. Blend 2 cups crushed macadamia nuts with 2 sprigs fresh mint and a half-cup of honey. Mix into a paste and rub over your body to exfoliate dead skin. Rinse and pat dry.

    5. Mash a ripe mango with one tablespoon plain yogurt. Add 2 egg yolks and blend. Work the mix into your hair, then cover your head with a shower cap and leave in place 20 minutes. Shampoo thoroughly. It's the ultimate hair conditioner!
