Chiropractic medicine
How many of you go to a chiropractor? My son has been going to one for over 5 years and he seems to really benefit from the manipulations. If you do go does your health insurance cover the cost?

We do and we love our chiro!! Our insurance doesn't cover chiro care. We started going when my dd was 9 or so, she was diagnosed with migraines at 5 and for those first few years they kept trying and changing meds for the headaches. I was becoming concerned about some of the things they asked us to use. After talking to a friend that loved her chiro we decided to take her and she has not had to use meds of any kind since she started seeing him! She is almost 21 now and I can count on 1 hand the number of migraine headaches she has had in the last 5 plus years!

I go to a chiropractor, usually once every six weeks or so. I call it my tune up to keep my back from becoming painful.
Our insurance does cover the cost of this and my copay is 15.00. Not taking any medications for lower back pain is a bonus.

I love, love my chiropractor. About 5 yrs ago I bent over to get something from the bottom drawer of a filing cabinet and felt something "snap". After numerous appointments to a medical doctor, x-rays, and them wanting me to do weeks of physical therapy, nothing helped. They were talking back surgery (Yikes)
Upon the suggestion of my dad, he suggested a chiropractor and after 5 appointments, I was "cured." I was able to walk, sit and lay without pain. I am now a believer!
Wish I would have gone there first

We all benefit from going to the chiropractor. We had insurance that covered the cost, but our new insurance does not. Since we are now self pay patients, our doctor gave us a better deal than what the insurance provided.

My ex went to one... turned out my ex had a serious problem and the chiro visits made it worse. They ( the back docs) are good some some things but not for those with serious problems.
I went with my ex on several occasions, no way I'd have all that stuff done !.. looks like torture, not treatment.
but...
it does help some people with minor problems...
( my ex had a hernaited t3 and t4 and wound up in emergency surgery)

I use a chiro, even after having had back surgery for ruptured discs (T3 & T4). The back surgery had nothing to do with a chiro, wasn't even seeing one when I ruptured the discs. I had to have surgery as I was losing use of my legs. Anyway I love the chiropractor. The important thing is to find one you really like and are comfortable with. If you find one you like but don't seem to get any relief or help from his/her treatments I advise seeking another one. They can be a real asset if you find a good one.

thats what happened to my ex... he hurt his back and went to a chiro instead of a doctor... in a few weeks his leg went dead and he couldn't walk.
After then going to a medical doctor, he had to have surgery for a pinched nerve... and herniated disks.
it was wild.
It really was something... but he had the surgery, got well and had no need to go back to the chiro since he was back walking and felt ok

Yes, I believe in chiro's. I found the only relief for my back/neck problems with my chiro. He spends an hour with me at each appointment, and usually one appointment does it. Best of all, he only charges whatever my co-pay would be, so I don't file it with insurance.

I definitely believe in chiropractic. I've seen too many people worse off after surgery to let an MD touch my back. As with any profession there are good ones and bad ones. I have problems with chiropractors selling supplements. I also won't go to anyone who wants to put patients on a "program" and keep them coming back 2 or 3 times a week. But they aren't all like that.
We have a very good one now. In addition to giving adjustments, she is a very good teacher and helps us be able to take care of ourselves. We only go when we need her but that is fine with her. I trust my chiropractor much more that I trust my MD.

I love my chiropractor. I have found the most relief from my fibormyalgia symptoms by going to one. I did go to a different one a long time ago and only went once. He checked me out told me that it would take 10 visits and wanted over $850 and that was probably 15 years ago. My chiropractor now is $40 dollars a visit and I go on a problem by problem bases. Usually 3 visits corrects whatever is going on.

Nope. My grandfather was told that chiropracters could cure his back problems. He kept getting more and more pain and was told to keep coming back. Eventually bones started breaking, turns out he had multiple myoloma. He died from that and if he had been referred to a physician from the chiropracter for further tests would he had lived?

I love my chiro, have been getting treatment (on and off, on a "as needed" basis although the first treatment session took several months) for almost the last decade. He's been in practice for over 20 years and he's definately one of the good ones! I helped out in my parent's restaurant, sometimes 16 hour days, when I was a teenager so my body is "older" than it should be. I used to have daily back pain, numbness and lots of muscle cramps in my late 20s.
I've referred several friends and family, who were bent double in pain, with herinated discs to my D.C. as well but most of those have been lumbar discs. They took xrays, did ultrasound and massage to loosen up the muscles, distraction to open the joints and then adjustments. It took about two weeks to a month for each of them to get better, they felt very good after a treatment but it wouldn't "hold" until half a week later.
One of the things my D.C. has been very upfront about is that if there wasn't any minor improvement (obviously, a problem that's been around for 10 years isn't going to go away after a month or even half a year of treatment) in two weeks to a month, then the Dr (traditional or otherwise) is wrong and needs to re do the treatment plan/take xrays/request tests/refer out.
I'll take my adjustments any day over taking pain killers and trying to make sense of the pages of side effects on some of these drugs!Last edited by Compte de Yoyo; 03-27-2008 at 04:23 AM.
