Anyone else doing Weight Watchers?
I used to go to WW. I lost a little weight, and then it became too expensive, so I quit. But I have all the info, so now I'm trying to do it on my own. Some people need to go to meetings to do well, but I'm a private person who doesn't make friends easily, so doing it solo should be possible for me. I think that being successful at a diet depends on having your head in the right place.... and I really think I'm at that point now.
I'd love to know if anyone else from FV is doing WW, probably the toughest part will be staying frugal with this.... with the prices of produce and groceries right now. At least I'm not buying a bunch of prepackaged crap for my family anymore, that stuff would always tempt me!
So it's counting points for me

I'm doing ww on my own too. I like this better than going to the meetings and sitting around with a bunch of strangers. Maybe if I had a pal to go with it would be different. Oh well, think of the money I'm saving!!

Never done it. And going to the meetings has always been
a big drawback for me also. Maybe I'll look into it again." May we never let the things we can’t have or don’t have or shouldn’t have spoil our enjoyment of the things we do have and can have. As we value our happiness, let us not forget it. One of the greatest lessons in life is learning to be happy without the things we cannot or should not have."

I feel like I am going for my 8th or so time. It is the only way i can lose , and I guess for my health, I am justifying paying for it. I have tried and tried to do it on my own. I certainly know the program. I did lose about 10lbs on my own before Christmas but I wasn't doing it the healthy way. So, back to WW I went. I have been going for around 5 wks and I have lost another 5lbs. So I know going to the meetings help me. I don't always stay, but I always try to weigh in.

Thinking about joining just so I have to face the scales. If you pay monthly it's $39....lord knows I have spent money on less worth while things!

Me! I'm a lifetime member (6 years) but recently went back because I'd put on about 10 pound over the last few years. It only took me 4 weeks to get back to no-pay status (within two pounds of my goal weight) I'm back where I should be now...but I'll continue to go. I need the accountability!!! And the program WORKS!

WW alternatives
Just an FYI...there is a group called TOPS that is very similar to WW except its a nonprofit group. I used to go to TOPS meetings in my area and I found that they were very helpful. My friend (who had money to spare for it) went to WW but when we compared notes, we were basically doing the same thing at meetings (weigh-ins, learning about healthy eating, recipe swaps, discussing strategies for eating out, walking clubs, supporting each other and recognizing success). The fees you pay (when I was a TOPS member the fees were about 1/4 of what WW charged) basically go to paying for the photocopying of resources and renting the meeting space although there is the option to buy extra resources and workbooks from TOPS.
If you're looking for a group of people who are all working towards the same goal and the accountability of a weekly weigh-in "in person", you might want to look into TOPS as an alternative to WW. I'm not sure if I'm allowed to put their link in the post but if you google "take off pounds sensibly", TOPS Club is one of the first results (if not the first). I stopped because my work schedule got a bit crazy and I could never make it to the meetings but it was great when I could make it.
Another option (which I'm sure has been mentioned elsewhere on FV) is spam! It is better fried than typedspam! It is better fried than typedspam! It is better fried than typedspam! It is better fried than typedspam! It is better fried than typedspam! It is better fried than typedspam! It is better fried than typedspam! It is better fried than typedspam! It is better fried than typedspam! It is better fried than typedspam! It is better fried than typed.com. It's a FREE site (seriously...I always thought I would find a catch but there isn't one) that offers meal plans, exercise plans (along with demos), TONS of articles on health topics as well as the opportunity to join online teams with similar goals for support. There is a "tracker" function where you can input your exercise, other goals and caloric intake.
I hope these might prove helpful to someone. I've used both and found them to be great sources of support!!!I want to kill my mortgage! 192,391/197,370 (since July 2011)
I'm attempting to live by the principles of The Compact in 2012. Wish me luck!
2012 Financial goals
- make an extra $15k over and above any flying pay (1705/15000)
- pay an extra $1750 off my mortgage (557/1750)
- bring EF back to $10k - $3533 left to save
- avoid lifestyle inflation
- improve investment plan (change accounts) - *grumble grumble* Bank made a mistake, need to re-do paperwork
The Financial Goals I've achieved: increased RSP contribution to $300/mth, posted budget on FV for review, saved $1600 to go on vacation

I just joined weight watchers and signed up for the monthly pass 39.00. I like it so far because I need the education, rethinking of my food habits and I have already made friends there. But most of all I needed to do just something for me.
I'm not sure how this is going to effect our monthly food budget, but so far after one week it doesn't seem to bad. I didn't buy any of the weight watchers products though. Mostly fruits, veggies and low cal bread which I can get at the discount bread store. I did buy some fat free sugar free fudgesicles, but then I used to buy icecream anyway.
Mostly I think I need the accountability, I need to face the scale and see my weight written down. It has been easy for me to put blinders on and make excuses for not taking care of myself. No more excuses.
Any weight watchers people out there who have low cost ww friendly recipes I would love to hear about them! I can use all the help I can get!

I'm glad to see I'm not alone on this journey!
Liz, thank you for this info on TOPS, and the free website. I'm going to look into those.
The WW website does have a discussion board which is free. I don't post often, but it's a great place to lurk and get ideas for low point meals & snacks. It's another friendly and fun forum, like this one
, and there aren't too many of those!

When I got to within 15 pounds of my goal weight I joined. I was really disappointed with the leader and honestly it was almost *exactly* what I had been doing on my own. The main difference is I was counting calories instead of points. I found it easier to continue on with my own program..... . I do think it's a great program though, you'll do well again if you stick to it and change your life not just your diet.
