    Default Canker Sore - OUCH!

So, there's been quite a bit of stress around here lately, and suddenly, I find myself with my first ever canker sore. It is in the back of my mouth where my cheek meets my gums. It's big and :surprise: boy, does it hurt!

Aside from buying some sort of pain reliever, does anyone have any home remedies for getting rid of this thing?

    Default Sorry

Yep, I get these lots and lots! In fact, it's an unusual thing that I don't have one (thankfully, I don't right now!). Anyway, there really is not much to do for them, sorry. I use warm saltwater, gargle with it, it seems to help a bit. I have some prescription stuff, but that's cause I get them so bad and so often! Orajel can help. You will need to watch what you eat while you have it. Mustard is a KILLER!! Be careful when you brush that you don;t stab it.....OUCH!!!

I agree with Traci, warm water with some salt added is what I have always used. I do it several times a day.

Someone once told me to use Listerine. I tried it. Unfortunately, the taste was so bad I couldn't do it more than once. I can't say whether it works or not.

    Hope you feel better soon.

A wet tea bag works wonders. Black tea is best, it has the tannins in it.

When I get them I use straight salt (Kosher). It hurts like the dickens, but it goes away real quick.

I get these often, too. My friend swore by eating a grapefruit, chewing slowly.

There's a new OTC treatment that I've found: they're little disks that you apply overnight and when you wake up, it's gone. The problem is that they're a little expensive and depending on the location, the disk might not stick on.

I used to get them constantly as a child & teenager. Thankfully I haven't had one for over 20 yrs now. Mine were so painful I needed an RX from my Dr. I believe what he prescribed for me was called Xylocaine.

I feel for you....hope it heals soon.

Try the natural herb pill Lysine my friend swears by it.

The amino acid L-Lysine works very well for preventing the cold sore outbreaks and will heal the canker sores when an outbreak is present. This particular L-Lysine product, here, is especially beneficial because it not only contains L-Lysine but also Echinacea, Licorice Root, Garlic Bulb, Goldenseal Root and vitamin C, all of which help treat canker sores. It comes in a liquid form which makes it easy for children to take.

You can get it at walmart.

Ouch! I hate those things. Warm saltwater is what I've always heard, too, though usually I don't do anything with mine. If I get a really painful one I will use a little Oragel to numb the area, and I try not to have "chewy" foods (LOL) for a few days if I can avoid them.

Swishing with Children's liquid Benedryl works great for these too.

    I'm glad you are better.
