Can anyone educate me about Slippery Elm?

My 14 year old ds seems to be getting sore throats every other week. He had is tonsils removed 10 years ago. I do take him into the doctor just to be sure it isn't strep or anything else serious. More often than not it is just a sore throat. I'm looking to use more "natural" or "holistic" things instead of the OTC stuff. I saw Slippery Elm in my Health Food store and was interested in it but wasn't able to speak to anyone about it.
