anyone know how to make this blanket? Not sure how to describe it?
I have seen the blanket at 3 different photography sites.
I have no idea if this is sewing or what?
Thanks so much if you can help.
I am dying to make this thing.

My gran used to make these....she used to say they were a pain just because of the weaving process. I do remember that she would sew the long strips of fabric to the binding strip for the top and then the bottom of the blanket so that she could clamp those into her quilting and blanket frame. She would then roll one end of the frame under (so the length of the blanket was cut in half and the fabric was tight. She could then actually reach to do the weaving) and she would weave strips width wise until she had the length of the blanket filled in. She wove hers alot tighter than that blanket that was shown on your link. Before she took it off the frame, she would pin the binding down both sides so that she could sew it easier. Unfortunately, she is not here for me to ask more detailed directions. So I hope what I said makes sense. She could create one of these in just a few days after her fabric was cut/torn into strips. She would also create potholders and throw rugs the same way.
edited to say the only sewing she did on hers was the binding she did around the edges, and the binding was the same width of the strips used for the weaving. The lengthwise strips were just a bit wider than the widthwise strips.Last edited by khjmom; 10-25-2008 at 10:58 PM.

That blanket is awesome. It would look great in my dd's room. It reminds me of one of those giant pot holders that I used to make as a kid. I guess I will check ebay since I am not talented enough to make one myself.

Thanks everyone!
I would sure rather buy one but I may give this a try!
When I zoom in on the pics of this blanket it looks as if they fabric strips are folder or possible folded accordion style.
Can you imagine folding and possible ironing this?
The cutting too?
Maybe its like a quilt where its truly worth the trouble.
If I understand what you all are saying this is like weaving construction paper?
But on a huge scale
That pic is very helpful! Though my strips will be tiny compared to that.

It's actually quite easy to turn in the edges of the strips with your fingers as you go along. I am knitting strips of fabric now and just turn in the edges with my fingers as I go.
This is reminiscent of a rug I once set up to make but didn't. It was made exactly like those potholders...only the warp was stretchy (to hold everything in place) and the weft wasn't. This looks like both warp and weft are cotton. I set up 4 2x4s with 3" nails pounded in every 3" to run the strips. I was going to nail the 2x4s into a frame and work the rug on that.
DH was less than enthusiastic about this project, which is why it never got underway even.
