Need Flannel Board Opinions
Hey everyone... need your opinions.
I found these 2 sets of Flannel Board shapes FS on another site. (I have posted pics below) They are $3.50 each set plus shipping. First of all is this a fair price?
Now... I have never seen a Flannel Board... How well do the shapes stick to them? Cuz if they just fall off Tyler will get frustrated.
Is it regular flannel like a shirt? Or is it actually felt? How expensive is the fabric?
And what are the actual pieces made out of?
Tyler loves to play at places that have these type of boards and you can stick the shapes to them and move them around. And he loves animals and cars and trains. So I thought this would be fun for him.
Also... how hard is it to find these shapes if I wanted to get more in the future? Like I think the alphabet would be cool when he's a little older.
I was thinking I could staple some fabric to a wall in his room like halfway up... and then tack a frame around it to cover the staples. Then he'd have a flannel board wall. Yes? No? Help! Any ideas?
I need input.
Here is a pic of the one set... she says its not all pictured. There are:
4 monkeys,4 airplanes2 dolls,5 boats,5 trains,4 dumptrucks,5 bears
5 rocking horses,5 jack in the box,10 busesSherry

Here's the animal set.
I'm not sure if this one has more than what's pictured. I asked her and haven't heard back yet. I'll update when I do.
Edited to add:
Ok... she answered me and this set is all pictured. There are 13 pieces to it.Sherry

I would bet making the letters yourself would be easy....
Here are a couple links to making them....... HTH......

Use this link to find ideas for stories.....
http://www.homespunkids.com/
How about shapes that he could make things out of...... EI, Circles and triangels to make ice cream cones....
How about taking a piece of felt and cutting jigsaw puzzles for him ?????
BWT.... about his room..... If your still looking for ideas..... How about a free standing road sign...... like a stop sign on a circle or square base and put hooks on the pole so he can hang is coats and hats......

Thanks, Lori! I will check those links.
She says there is someone ahead of me interested in those shapes.
But I wonder if I could just make him a set myself.
The road sign is cool! I can do that easy when we get the woodshop going. Thanks!!!!Sherry

Could I make them fancy by cutting pictures from fabric and gluing or sewing the flannel to the back of them?

Maybe I could find some cardboard animals or shapes... magnets or something, and glue the felt to them. That would be more durable.

Ok.... Wal-Mart has felt by the yard for $3.57/yd (54" wide).
Its wider than I need it to be, so I will have extra of it for making the pieces to stick on it.
What is the cheapest way to make some nice pieces for it? I would like to do animals and cars and trucks for sure.
We already have spray adhesive and staples for attaching it to the wall. And 1x2s for the frame.
AND Tyler got Halloween cards in the mail today from his grandparents and great-grandparents in PA, with cash in them! So they are going to make him his felt wall.
This is going to be so cute! He's going to love it!Sherry

Sherry, I pasted the info from that page...........
Homemade Flannel Board submitted by Linda (lindafh)
You will need: sign board
large piece of felt (color or your choice; cut same size as sign board)
white glue
trim (of your choice; enough to go around the all edges of the board)
Cut the sign board to the size and shape you want for the finished board. (My board is 24" height X 48" wide). Also cut a piece of sign board 8" wide x 16" height (stand should be at least 3/4 of the finished height of the board) - this is the stand. For the stand: Measure 2" in along the long side of the stand. Fold along this line. Apply glue to the 2" fold and apply to the center back of the board - with bottom edges even. You may wish to also staple or apply rivets for extra security. Stand the board up....trim the bottom edge of the "stand" on an angle that is pleasing to you to allow the finished board to rest on an angle. To finish the board, glue the felt to the front of the board. Add trim around the edges (optional - but it looks nice!).
If you wish, this flannel board could also be attached to a wall with wall mirror fasteners at a perfect height for the kids.

Homemade Flannel Board Characters submitted by Linda (lindafh)
Do your kids have a favorite story that they like read over and over? Make a flannel story to go with it so that they can reenact the story on their own or along with the story as you read! Decide what characters and scenery you want to include in the flannel story. Photocopy each one on a color copier. Enlarge, if necessary. Cut around each piece leaving about 1/4 inch around the edge. Apply a piece of clear contact paper to the front of each piece. Apply a piece of felt to the back. Trim each piece close to the outline of each character/scenery piece. It's now ready for your story! I find it helps to print the name of the story on the back of each piece...just in case the felt stories are accidentally mixed up! I keep the felt pieces in zip lock bags marked with the name of the book/story, and store in a large tote box. OR IF YOU HAVE A STORY YOU WANT TO TELL DRAW YOUR OWN PICTURES TO GO ALONG WITH IT!!

I think that's a good idea...
For now I could print shapes and such on the computer, contact paper them and put felt on the back.
I will eventually come across more and better things in my travels.Sherry

I bought red felt at WalMart tonight for it.
I have found some pictures online of Pooh and friends, Buzz and Woody, and some farm animals, and some cars.
I also got contact paper tonight to cover them before I glue them to the felt.
I'll let ya know tomorrow if it works. lolSherry
