Need suggestions - yarn bowls
I was on a needlework site and someone asked if anyone had a yarn bowl. I had never heard of them, but when I looked at some on Etsy I fell in love - not to mention covetousness. But they are very expensive, most in the $30-40 range (too rich for me) and since they are pottery, cost the moon to ship.
They are essentially a bowl with a slash curving down to the side, or, in the one I WANT, a spiral. You pop a ball of yarn in the bowl, and run it through the slash-guide (or a hole) to work it. No more balls of yarn rolling away on the floor, or falling through the gap in the recliner. Ah....
A co-worker was looking at it, being attracted by my obvious case of drooling over my keyboard, and commented that I could take some of the newspaper we recycle, and make one for practically nothing from paper mache. And there must be other crafty materials out there now that could be used for cheap imitation pottery.
Do any of you have any ideas or suggestions? This is something I have never done before, but would love to try.Donna

My suggestion is to call the DIY pottery place (I'm pretty sure there is one up there) and see if they have anything like that or if they could notch a bowl for you before they fire them. then you could paint it to your taste.

This sounds like a wonderful idea. I have never seen one, but will be looking at options to use here at my house.
Do you have a website that you could list showing the example you were writing about?Hello from Sunny Central Florida

This is the one I loved:

If you go to etsy.com and search "yarn bowls" it will come up with many examples.Donna

I'm glad I'm not the only one drooling over yarn bowls!! I fell in love with them a couple of weeks ago and will be putting it on my Christmas wishlist!

My first thought was Christmas, but then I thought how much yarn I could buy with that much money instead.

I've never seen one and for whatever reason my comp is blocking sites today but try taking a clay pot that has a hole in the bottom and place it upsidedown over your ball of yarn (on the floor or on a tabl) and feed the yarn through the pot drain hole...done and done frugally! Really you could make it as fancy as you want or leave it plain!

I LOVE THAT!!!!
Thanks Donna for posting a picture.
For sure that will be on the Christmas or later Birthday list.
Maybe not a bowl, but I bet I could get my dh to make me a wooden box with the swirl opening on one side. Then I could paint or stain them. Hmmmm, me thinks I have a plan.Hello from Sunny Central Florida

Not long after this was originally posted I was in Walmart and saw a wooden bowl on clearance because there was a big ugly blackish splotch on one side. It was about 6-7" wide, quite deep, and shaped to be higher on the ends. I picked it up for two or three dollars, and it works perfectly. It isn't pretty, but it's perfect for the task.
These are some great ideas you've all come up with though!Donna
