Using a scroll saw

I think it was Calico that posted a really neat site with primitive wooden angels and signs etc to make. I REALLY liked these!

Anyway I have NEVER made anything out of wood in my life, so I don't know if I'm right but I assume that these are the kind of things you do with a scroll saw?????

I am SO green I only know what a scroll saw looks like because I searched them on eBay LOL (oh and I can't see any difference between that and a fret saw?)

I know C.J.'s children use these saws, so my first thought was - if a child can use one it can't be that hard - but then I thought about the things C.J.'s children can do and I wasn't so sure LOL.

They seem to be quite expensive too and I don't really have lots of money to waste so I'm wondering what my chances are of learning to use something I know NOTHING about LOL.

C.J. ~ or anybody that 'knows' - Please help me here.

Well right now you could have one (of the children) and he doesn't even scroll saw!!! He is in my bad books right now. Grrrr

A scroll saw is easy to use and you can make many different things. One thing though, if you cutting straight lines, you don't use a scroll saw. But if you plan on cutting angels and primitive items, thats what you would use.

You don't need a large one, just make sure it is "variable". Here is a website for the one ds#1 has.

I forgot to add: They do take practice and it isn't something that everyone picks up easily. Also, it isn't something that everyone likes doing because you do need a lot of patience.

For me, its a pain because you have to drill a hole for each cut you need to do, so you need a drill. Then each cut, you have to lift the arm of the scroll saw, place the blade in and cut. Then you have to lift the arm of the saw, take out the blade, place it into another hole and continue with that in each item you cut out.

I just don't have the patience to do that, but dh, ds#1 and dd love doing it!!!

But if you like doing it, you can make beautiful things and there isn't anything that dh makes that he doesn't sell.

Thank you for all the info C.J. - Patience - what is that exactly? LOL.

I would really LOVE to try this - I'm a little nervous as if I wasted some more money on a whim I think DH would go insane LOL. I'll let you know if I get one, but I am going to think about it first - Also I never seem to make anything the way the pattern photographs look LOL.
