    Default Homemade Heating Pads

    HOMEMADE HEATING PADS
    Cyndy writes:
"You can make a heating pad by making  2 of any size square
and sewing them together on all four sides, leaving an opening
and filling with rice or millet (buy the millet at a feed store)
then close the final size. Heat for a few minutes in the
microwave and stays warm  for quite awhile."

    Dee says:
"For the person  who wants a pattern for a micro-heating pad.
I  have one from Hancock Fabric Store some time ago.  It is
simple to make: all thats needed is a finger tip towel and
(Regular rice not minute rice) sew the finger tip towel in
half and fill with regular rice about 2-2 1/2 cups  Sew up
end..  Heat in microwave on high for about 2- 2 1/2 minutes.
I find that heating at about 60-70 power for aboout 3 minutes
is fine.  However do not use a fingertip towel that has metallic
thread for decoration it  tens to burn the towel. (a brown spot)
Its  use is for about 45-50 times.  If the rice no longer gets
warm enough discard rice , wash towel and use again."

My grandma was famous for making these rice packs. Everyone she knew had at least one.

She sewed hers from heavy fleece and left one end open. She always left the rice in its original plastic bag inside her cloth bags, that way, after a while when the rice started to smell funky, you could simply replace it with a fresh bag of rice.

BTW, I also have one of these filled with corn kernals that I got at a craft show. It has the same effect, but it smells like popcorn when you heat it.
