Why you should make your own play dough for kids
Play Dough
1 cup flour
1/2 cup salt
2 teaspoons cream of tartar
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
1 cup water
Food coloring or Wonder Colors
Mix together flour, salt and cream of tartar. Add oil, water and coloring. Cook, stirring for 1 to 3 minutes or until thick. Knead almost immediately. Keep in an airtight container. This makes a nice, soft play dough and will last up to a year.
1)It makes them happy....

2)And ten minutes later...
...it is a jumbled mess.
She said she was making a train- guess it had a wreck. And even though it has only been three minutes since I took the second pic, it is much worse. It is becoming one yucky color and now has doll house furniture embedded in it! But she is having great fun.

lol My kids love when I make it too. Your pics are cute and funny.
Not sure if you saw my play dough I made for the kids. I used a recipe without cream of tartar. I'll try yours next time. Mine I think took more salt than yours though. If you'd like to help support Frugal Living by Sara Noel, my syndicated column, e-mail, write, or call the managing editor at your local newspaper and ask them to publish it in print or online. Aww, thanks. I think she is, but I think I am probably just a little bit biased.Originally posted by Michelle
LOL your dd is adorable
Sara, I used to use a recipe that didn't call for cream of tartar. I like this one, though. You can also add Kool-Aid. I added peppermint and vanilla extracts. And I use something called "Angel Cream" from the Mennonite store near my parents- it is a MUCH cheaper substitute for cream of tartar.

Your dd is sooo cute!
I was remembering making play dough for my dkids, when they were little, just the other day. It cost so very little to make and kept them happy for hours. Who needs Toys R Us? lol
