My braided towel rug.
I made this after I saw Sara's post ( braided towel rug ) I spent most of the day on it because as Babette mentioned in the other post, you really need to sew it on a flat surface. Consequently, I had to undo it and start again. It is only basted right now, and I finally figured out how to do it without the stitching showing at the very end.
As you can see, it needs to be re-shaped on one side and stitched up tighter. IT is going to be a Christmas gift for MIL (who probably bought us most of those towels years ago.)

That's fantastic! I am impressed
I'll have a red & white one please!
I think I could manage to trash, er I mean cut, the towels but I am not sure I could reconstitute them into something so attractive

I showed it to DH and he wanted to know if it will frey. Does it look like there will be a lot of lint off of it? Just wondering, as I have some old towels too...

Lacyj, thanks for mentioning that- I actually meant to bring that up in my first post.
This is definitely a project you will want to work on over a hardwood or linoleum floor, or newspaper if you don't have those. There were TONS of little linty bits all over the place when I did this.
At first, I thought about using my pinking shears to cut the strips. I kept looking and looking at the photos in that tutorial, but I finally decided that she DIDN'T use pinking shears- they only mention scissors. Which was good for two reasons- I haven't seen my pinking shears in over a week, and I ended up using my rotary cutter. If I had used scissors to cut every single strip, I would have gone mad.
That said, though, when you braid the rug, the edges get pretty folded over, and it doesn't seem too linty anymore. If you pick up the individual strips and shake them, you get thousands of little lint bits. But if you shake the braided rope, not so much. I don't know yet, but once this thing is REALLY sewn together well (not just basted,) I think you can PROBABLY safely wash it in the washer.
HTH.

I can't have any rugs in my bathroom because Ma will trip on them & the tile floor gets chilly. The only time is when taking a shower then picking it back up.

It looks fabulous! You may find that after it's been used a bit that the shaping works it'self out.
Way to go!!
