It's just the right time of year for Apple-Head Dolls
I've not made one of these before, but I'm thinking about trying it. (Tried my hand at needle sculpture yesterday and the result was abysmal, so this might be better.)
Apple dolls are uniquely American. I thought it might be fun to make one with one of the apples we pick today. My only concern is how long it will last- I can't seem to find any references.
I have a great idea for using one to replace the soft-sculpture fiasco from yesterday. If/when I get it finished, I will post a picture.

i made one many moons ago in girl scout camp. nothing quite as fancy as those in the picture, but it was still fun. when i came home from camp my mom put it in the kitchen on the window sill and it sat there for quite a long while. it's neat to watch the face change as the apple dries.

Well, I accidentally left mine outside drying in the sun (after a week in front of a fan) and it disappeared....
(Though even if it hadn't, with all the rain we have gotten the almost-completely-dried apple would have been completely reconstituted anyway!!!)
So now I have to start again. I will probably do it later tonight or tomorrow, and this time I will try to take pictures through all the steps.

When I was a very little girl living in Tennessee, our next door neighbor made these and I thought she was the smartest person in the world for being able to. Thanks for the memory!
