Default When you do needlework do you?

When you do needlework do you use a hoop or just hold it in your hand? I prefer using a hoop and pretty tight around the project I am working on.

depends on the size of the project. If I am doing something small, i don't bother with the little bitty hoops. But otherwise, I most often do use a hoop. I hate it when i am right next to the hoop and it is in the way of one or two more sts I need to do! drives me batty.

do you do free hand or use a chart? I do counted cross stitch.

I use a hoop. I need the tension in the material.

I didn't use to use a hoop, but recently I finished a 16 x 20" counted cross stitch on 18ct Aida. It had a lot of half-cross stitches and by the time I got it done, it was tilt-y.

I'm quilting right now and using a hoop because of that experience.
