Denim pants plant holder

Has anyone made a plant holder out of a youth size pair of denim blue jeans. I ran across an article about one and it looked really cute. They had stuffed the jeans with walmart bags, etc. and then made it stiff with some kind of fabric stiffner. Then varnished it so it would sit outside.

I SAW THESE AT A HOMEMAKERS MEETING, BUT HAVEN'T MADE MINE YET.
THEY USED A PAIR OF TODDLER JEANS, (OR SHORTS). SLIPPED THEM OVER A LARGE COFFEE CAN THEN CUT OFF THE LEGS. MAKE SURE YOU LEAVE ENOUGH PANT LEG SO THE BOTTOM OF CAN IS COVERED, SO YOU DON'T HAVE ANY HOLES. REMOVE THE JEANS FROM CAN, THEN SOAK THE JEANS WITH STA-FLO LIQUID STARTCH. RING OUT EXCESS. THEN LET DRY. I CAN'T REMEMBER HOW LONG (MAYBE 3-4 DAYS).
IF YOU LEAVE THE POCKETS KINDA OPEN YOU CAN PUT STUFF IN THEM WHEN ITS DRY. THEY DIDN'T PUT VARNISH ON THEM THOUGH.
THESE ARE SO CUTE AND MAKE NICE CENTER PEICES.

I made my first denim plant holder a couple weeks ago and am quite pleased. I'm going to give this to my brother as a Christmas present and am going to make another one for my next door neighbor.

What do you think?

I need help. This would be a wonderful gift for my mom and mother in law for Christmas. However, i dont know what to varnish it with. I looked at the web site and cannot find anyone that carries the high gloss coating around here.

I love it, ther so cute. Did anyone ver use a old workboot , fill with clay, make sure lots of holes in toe and side etc. and plant flowers, really cute.
