I get to add to this today. I found out yesterday that I'm being changed from salaried to hourly wage. At first this freaked me out, but as I learned I don't lose any of my existing benefits (e.g., 401K, health/dental/eye, Stock Options, etc.). What I do gain is that I get paid 40hrs per week and any overtime (which often happens when I actually teach somewhere -- even when I go to Manhattan) will be paid at time and a half. The bonus raise will be canceled -- sorta. Rather than my sizeable bonus raise being dependent on corporate whim, it will be rolled into my base hour wage.

This means I know what I'll get as a base minimum each month (which will be more than what I get now). On top of that I could get a substantial increase for time in class. This is great news given that K is having difficulty finding work in L.A. and could mean that I should be able to take care of the rent for both of us. On top of that, the company has filed the paperwork for an immigrant visa (H1-B). Which means I can stay longer in the US if I get it.

Congratulations!!!! So great to hear good news in this economy of ours!!

I don't know anything about getting a green card. How do you get one? And how are you here without one?

I have a legal work visa (L1-B) and my company is helping me get an immigrant work visa (H1-B). I have some specialized knowledge that one can't get outside of the company.

Welp. More update on the salary stuff. My boss told me that my salary base is being increased (start July 1) and I keep the bonus on top of that as well. To put it in a nutshell: my over salary is increased by nearly 40%

Now when I switched from the support division to the education division, I know they low-balled me on my salary. I've out performed what they expected and have shown my worth. It's finally coming out in pay.

There does seem to be a downside to the hourly, which is during non-teaching weeks I won't be pay (which as a visa holder sucks since I cannot "moonlight") but given that I work 2-3 weeks each month and have additional requirements that would be paid for, I should be able to maintain my salary. I've also applied for a position that is salaried. If I get it, I keep my newly given salary.

    Life is good.
