I made eye patches for all the guests, but you can buy them at the dollar store these days. I gave them each washable tattoos.
I bought candy wrapped in gold and silver foil- some looked like coins, some were just nuggets. I put them in brown fabric bags with drawstrings as party favors.
We watched "Black Beard's Ghost" on video.
I sent them on scavenger/treasure hunt. Each team had a different set of clues and maps.
Decorations included-- a pirates flag on the porch, several stuffed toy parrots, treasure map placemats, spy glasses, we rigged a "gang" plank entrance up to the porch.
I hung netting from the walls and hung various items from it-- things like star fish, plastic fish, small lanterns, knives, swords- etc.
I filled black balloons with water and let them have 'cannon ball' water fights (my son's birthday is in July)
There is a great section on b-day parties in the Complete Tightwad Gazette and she talks specificly about a pirate party. If you dont hvae this book Im sure it is available at your library.

learning to make it on my own!
we did a pirate party for Ryan - We turned our huge driveway in to a bay like area (picture the pirates of the caribean at disneyland. I took huge appliance boxes and turned them into giant ships with huge sails made from sheets. and I loaded each ship with cannonballs made from duct taped newspaper. the boys had cannon ball fights trying to sink each others ships (the Torrid Tanya and Bloody Mary)they had sword fights on a plank with swords made from balloons. then we had a treasure hunt ( i made maps on parchment and burnt the corners then stuck them in bottles - the treasure chest was just homemade and filled with trinkets and jewels, dubloons, and candy. We had a parrot pinata. Everyone came in costume and I made them hats and eye patches. We did some other games like timebomb which I made from paper mache and put a kitchen timer in it (basically hot potato. The courtyard was all surrounded with cardboard buildings that I painted to look like Pirates of Car. It was a blast!
sometime I 'll have to tell you about our Medieval party, Shot in the Dark party, rodeo party, and CAT truck party!! oohh! and the murder mysteryparty and the disco party!
