Default Fourth of July Pet Safety

Here are some hints for a safe holiday for our furbabies.

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Fourth of July Safety Tips

As the 4th of July approached, the following are some tips to help Pet Parents keep their pets safe:
    • The week of 4th of July is the busiest week at animal shelters nationwide -- make sure that all of your pets are wearing up-to-date identification in case they get lost.
    • If you know that your dog gets nervous during thunderstorms, consult with your vet about getting a prescription tranquilizer to help your pet through the difficult days around the 4th.
    • It's much better for your pets if you leave them at home during your 4th of July festivities. You may want to include them in every family activity, but during this busy time, it's safer for them to stay at home.
    • When your pet is at home, keep him or her inside as much as possible.Your pet will feel safer and be much less likely to escape from home if he or she becomes frightened.
    • Even if your pet doesn't exhibit fear during thunderstorms, keep in mind that fireworks sound and look very different; keep your pet indoors -- he'll feel much more secure.
    • Some dogs are not only afraid of the sounds of the 4th, but the sights as well. If you'll be in close contact with any fireworks, keep your pet indoors for safety.
    • If your pet is indoors and is still very nervous, try creating a safe spot for him or her inside your home. Put your pet in a crate, or a smaller room, like a bathroom or a laundry room.
    • Try playing soft music to soothe your and to try to block out the sounds of fireworks.

Our dogs hate the fireworks. They get so nervous! I keep them in till I go to bed but lots of years in the past there have still been fireworks so I coax them into the garage to spend the night. Poor fellows take a while to get over it.
