    forestdale,
In our area we pass out candy from 6pm to 8pm. Other areas may have different times, but it's usually 2 hours. During this time all of our area police and fire department are out to patrol the streets to keep the mischief down. If you want to pass out candy, you turn on your porch light and expect a ringing doorbell and knocks on your door. After your porch light goes out at 8pm you are not suspose to get any trick or treaters.
Our neighborhood usually has a women's get together during this time. The women all go to 1 house (rotates every year), we all pass out candy from that 1 house. We all dress up, take snacks and drinks for us adults, pass out candy and catch up on events with the neighbors. WHILE the MEN walk the kids around trick or treating!! They also catch up on neighborhood events and talk SPORTS! LOL
The kids love it - they get to go with their friends as a group and Dad carries the bag when it gets heavy. LOL It's been a tradition now for the past 3 years. It's a win/win situation for everyone.

We had no trick or treaters and haven't since we moved in. I kind of miss them actually, but we live in a secluded area and there are no kids around. I alway buy candy, just in case.

In our city each neighborhood sets a time, usually 6-8 p.m. The police are usually out during this time too, not intruding, just keeping an eye on things.

In my parents' subdivision where we took the kids trick or treating many people sit on their driveways with their jack o lanterns & decorations and hand the candy to the kids as they walk by. Some people have fires and little parties in their yards. If people are not outside it's pretty much understood that if the porch light is on you can ring the doorbell and trick or treat at that house.

Our city designated my neighborhood as a "safe" area so we get lots and lots of kids that come through for trick or treating and we had more than the usual in older kids........they were all polite and said thank you so I didn't have any problems with them! Our last TOT'ers rang the door bell at 8pm after that we didn't have any more!

My four went out in costume. They are 20,19, 18, 17. They always say trick or treat and then thank you. Or Mom gets the treat! We also took 4 small ones with us 10,8,5,2. Pluse there were four older adults all dressed up.  We had so much fun. I had people trying to give me candy! lol

Before we left we gave out candy for an hour. We had alot of older kids. But no one was rude at all.

Our town doesn't have set rules, but 8:00 is our rule. The little ones start around 5:30. I just keep a good eye out & if there's kids running around, I get the light on.

The thing is, whether it's 7:30 or 9....if the light's out YOU DON'T KNOCK!

I let DD1 go to take taylor out. She'll probably get to go for many more years as she'll want to take Kennedy, too
We thought it was better than letting her run around with other teenagers breaking & smashing who knows what and some of her friends can drive now.....this was much safer.

My brother used to (I don't think he still does, but I could be wrong!!) buy a couple dozen eggs at the beginning of September, let them sit and rot until Halloween, and then go out and throw them at any trick-or-treaters that were over 13. He is 27 now, so hopefully he has stopped doing that!

I do have to admit that it was kind of funny though. Those 16, 17 year old kids with no costumes just trolling for candy...they didn't know what hit 'em.

I really prefer the older kids are out participating rather than getting into mischeif, but I didn't see any not in costume or after hours. I do think it's neat that alot of groups are sending the teens out asking for cans or food donations for their group instead of candy. Good way to keep them involved in the holiday at their own level.

Very good point. I didn't have too many older kids...maybe 2 or 3. I didn't mind so much because they *were* in costume.

What I really can't stand are the adults who bring around their infants...I'm talking babies that are obviously not even eating solid food yet---no other childre, and are there just to get candy for themselves.

We had a few and most of them I knew from working at an elementary school a few years ago, so I was like well hi so and so! It was kind of funny, but they were very respectful and had dressed up. Some of them were escorting their younger siblings. So I figure a candy bar or 2 isn't going to hurt anything.
