my crazy pink bedroom redux
15 years ago i painted my our (my) bedroom dark pink, after a room i became enchanted with in an historic federal home in washington DC.
kemmapinkwall.jpg
anyway, the paint is now 15 years old, looks quite nice. sherwin williams best. but the areas near the floor were showing age, pet splatters, and dirt. i set off in january to pick a new color. i watched gosford park, pride and prejudice, remains of the day, howards end, and sense and sensibility for historically accurate georgian paint colors. for months.
it is now may and i still had not selected one. i tried samples of dove gray, dark gray, earl gray, grizzle gray, iron ore, all of which were too bland or looked like a dungeon. seemed like a nice idea on the paint visualizer computer program.
then i saw a nice picture in a magazine of a very dark pink - an ethan allen ad that made me go wow. so i matched it -dragon fruit- and painted a swatch. my eyes never adjusted. nope.
then i tried various historically correct shades of green. nope.
in total frustration, and because the sherwin williams paint was on sale this weekend, i asked the room "what color do you want to be?". it said PINK- same pink. i said ok. i dug through the old paint cans to find the name and number of the pink paint and lo and behold a frugal miracle-- i found two unopened gallons of the same paint from 15 years ago. took forever to stir it and had to use an electric mixer, but it was still good.
my room now has a fresh coat of the same pink. amazing the difference a coat of paint makes. looks fresh instead of subtly dirty. i didn't have to get all nutty about "cutting in" because it was the same color, so it went fast.
i still have to paint the trim and crown mouldings. i hate painting "oil based paint" on trim. but i have the summer off....Last edited by ladykemma2; 05-31-2010 at 09:52 PM.

I like the pink and it's amazing what a fresh coat of paint can do.

a lot of people don't realize that paint from that period was garish and bright. not muddied down.
here is a picture of the staircase from powderham castle, called prussian blue. click on the picture to see it big. this castle in devon is on my "see before i die" list. it was used in movie "remains of the day". the same blue is used in the governors palace in colonial williamsburg.

and here is the picture from my dining room with the same blue. my ex made that mirror.
