How extensive is the renovation? Walls, closets, flooring, window treatments? Are you doing it or are you hiring someone else? If you're doing it yourself, it is dirty, dirty work. Wear old clothes and wear a face mask when doing demo, along with gloves. If you're hiring someone else, get references and CHECK THEM. Also, check with your Registrar of Contractors (I don't know if you have that in China). NEVER pay in full until the work is 100% complete and to your satisfaction.

I have a lot of experience in construction and remodels. Let us know what is the extent of your remodel and I can give you some pointers.

Renovation Math: 1 = 6 (one project becomes six)

Have more money available than you "expect" to need. Price out the cost of things first... dry wall, joint compound, flooring, etc. Are you doing cosmetic renovations or opening walls and ceiling? Depending on the age of the house there may be different products used (plaster and lath vs sheet rock or drywall). Know what to expect, ask neighbors if they ever did renovations and what did they find.

Sometimes it is easier to take down and put up a new wall than it is to retro fit a patch into an area that had a different depth of sheet rock. Trust me on that one. LOL

So what are you planning to do? Surface renovation (cosmetic) or structure (walls, electric update, etc)..... ?

Thank you, my dear. I am planing to hiring someone to do that. As you said, it's a dirty work, that's right; also i don't have extra time and no experience for renovation.

Now i am thinking about using which wall decors, the issue is discussing with my friends, so can you give me suggestions? Thanks in advance!

Jeccyka: I think if you are hiring someone to do the work, you want to be thinking who you are renoing for? Sounds like it's for you. Do you have some kind of somewhat neutral colour you like for the walls and floor? You can always add loud colours in bedding, pillows, etc. Those are easily changed when you tire of the look.

Are you trying to re-decorate or renovate as in demolition?

Do you have a set image in your mind? Are you able to find pictures on the internet and print them out or magazines clippings of what you'd like? Have you created an idea box or a mock layout of what you'd like done?

I agree with Ceashels, one project really does equal 6 more. So if you only have one budget, multiply it by at least 4 to hopefully cover the extra hidden costs and surprises that will pop up.

Well, as far as wall decors go, you have paint or wallpaper unless you consider another medium, like aluminum panels. Do they need to be moveable? Then maybe something like a sliding wood or lightweight bamboo.

Let me suggest you some DO's

Make a list of changes you want to do it , sort out them priority wise.
Do work out how much money you are ready to spend it on of it.
Hire professional or If you are done by yourself , list things & material used for renovation.

Calculate all the offers the contractor makes. We did not do a proper internet search for one of the offers, and the water heater came € 500 more expensive than what was on offer through other sources (same water heater). I think that if we had gone to the store ourselves and negotiated with the owner, we would have gotten an even better deal, because we installed a whole new hot water / heating system.
