Default Do you wipe off the tops of cans?

I was just wondering if anyone wipes off the tops of canned foods before opening them. My sister used to do this and I thought she was weird, but I've started doing it myself lately and can't believe how dirty some cans are and that this dirt has maybe been getting into my food I also wipe off soda-type cans before opening and drinking from them.

...I know I should, but sometimes I don't. I' always in such a hurry to do stuff. Thanks for asking that question. I'll be thinking about that next time I open one.

My mother always did, so I guess I do it out of habit. I once read an article about how some cans sit around in warehouses and whatnot, and they article said that you just don't know what those cans came into contact with. So, I am glad my mother always wiped them off and I followed her lead.

Don't always remember, but I do try. Don't wipe of the soda pop tops though.

Same here!! It's amazing all the dirt and gunk that comes off that could have ended up in the food!!

Okay, here's my story. My MIL washes her soda cans with soap and water because she claims the people that package/deliver the soda URINATE all over the cans. She's a little paranoid. She has told my kids this and it's a big joke. Yes, we wipe off the cans, but no reason to give a bad rep to all the guys that handle our soda cans!

I try to wipe them off. I picked up a single can of coke for a recipe yesterday at the convenience store. It was so gross. I couldn't believe how dirty it was.

Way back when (20 years ago) my little sister got a horrible case of mono and the doctor told her that she might have gotten it from not washing soda cans off before drinking out of them. She was pretty young and didn't have a boyfriend at the time. Ever since then I have always washed any can off before I open it and if my dks want to drink from a can of soda I make them use a straw!!

I don't mean to startle anyone, but it's not the dust. It's the RATS that are present in ALL warehouses !!! Yes RATS !!! They are proliphic (Urinate and defecate on everything) WASH THOSE CANS & don't forget to wash the can opener after use too. Think about it, 2 day old pork n beans juice on the blades...... YUK !!!

I always wash my can opener every single time I use it. I also run some hot water over the can lids before I wipe them off. My DH thinks I am weird, but I wash cantalope before I cut it. It sits on the ground, and those things look pretty darn dirty sometimes when I buy them. I don't want that inside my melon (from the knife) when I cut one.
