I did a search and couldn't find the post you are referring too.
This is what my opinion on the matter is: MY dh is a nationally certified air condition technician. . He scored higher on the NATE test then his boss who has been in air conditioning for over 25 yrs.
When I asked him about covering it he said it would be fine as long as it was done right. YOU CAN NOT cover it completely, there has to be breathing room. The cover has to be larger then the thermostat by X% and has to have a breathing vent. The truth is that your thermostat already is covered. That White plastic box thats around the insides is a cover, the actual thermostat is the guts that are on the inside. My electric bill has not gone up one penny since I put it on.
I am 100% confident that it is fine.
