I love the chair rail idea with butter cream on top and blue on the bottom. We did that in our dining room of our old house, it came out great! We painted the chair rail and baseboards white, the whole wall was a buttery yellow. But, just have to tell ya, I LOVE your bed! I love four poster beds and yours is really pretty!! I've been wanting to get one forever!

The poster bed is actually a pain if you have ceiling fans. Unless your room is large enough that the posts aren't in the way of the fan blades. We have moved like six times since buying that bed and only once have we been able to use the ceiling fan, other wise we just remove the posts in the summer.

I LOVE the colors! If you do the accent wall, put the blue behind the bed. My BR is done in terra-cotta and a sorta olive/herb green, with the green behind the bed and white trim and doors. Looks good with the Italian theme I have going on in my house right now.

For your doors, I was thinking of using another blue like about 4-5 shades lighter than the federal, but still in the federal blue family, kwim? You would really have to use a "good eye" to find the right shade, but I think it would work. Red is cute for your federal theme, but I think it might take away from your wall colors too much. Just my own 2 cents anyway!

As far as crown moulding with the chair rail, if your room is big, I don't think it'll affect the way the size appears. As a matter of fact, I read where crown moulding will give a visual effect of higher ceilings. Right now I'm stashing some money away to put crown in my D/R-L/R where I have the chair rail. The room is 16x38, so mucho bucks for the crown I want. Big ideas, small budget....LOL!

Anyways, if all else fails, use can always stick with the white for your doors. Have fun decorating and don't forget to post those pics! I know you'll do great!

I really like the colors that you have picked. I had voted for blue and I think the blue you have chosed would be perfect. My house has lots of blues and yellows.

I like the red idea for the doors. Especially if your theme is the primitive patriotic theme.

Can you post the red you had in mind? I'm hoping it's not fire engine red! LOL

I was thinking barn red or maybe something a little more earthy.

I think I will paint the walls and the trim first , if the blue looks as good as I think it will I will just paint the doors in the blue as well.

What about a warm taupe? It would give you nice contrast with your bedspread and my DH's USMC memorabilia really pops against that color, and your bedspread would contrast nicely. I have found so many gallons of 5$ paint at Lowe's lately in an assortment of taupe colors, so you might have luck there too. Just a thought.

Ok maybe I am the odd one out...since you want the furniture and decoration to stand out, I was thinking of a light green kind of like the baground here on the FV forums LOL The darkness of the bed will pop out, the decorations will stand out yet blend nicely.

But I do like that blue you've chosen but you said you don't get much sun in that room (unless I read incorrectly) and to me that just makes the room more drab.

Either way - I hope you have fun painting and enjoy the finished product once you're done and that you post pics!

Wedgewood Blue. Paint the trimmings the same color.
