    15 minutes at a time.
Take 15 minutes and a designated area and work from there.

Could you post pictures? That would help us give you specific suggestions.

Purge stuff no longer needed. Start three piles: Throwaway, giveaway and putaway. After you have the throwaway and giveaway stuff out of the way you will have more room. Then you organize the stuff you want to keep and the next step is containerize.

Build some shelves to hold the containers. You can build some cheaply with cinderblocks and then lay a board across for the shelf. Be sure to label the containers so you know what's in them.

we made shelves out of old doors (bifold mostly) organize everything into categories and designate an area for that then thin it out one category at a time....i think its less overwhelming that way

My basement is an ongoing project. We have purged a lot but there are still some things we need to keep like off-season clothing and Christmas decorations. In our basement we built some deep shelves out of 4x8 ft sheets of plywood. They are perfect for holding boxes and rubbermaid containers. We also bought a portable clothes rack that is sealed in a zippered vinyl case. We keep extra clothing in it and it keeps the dust off. We have put all the stored things in one corner of the basement to try and keep the rest of the basement a little more open and usable.
