gas stove
I need to clean our gas stove and there is a cleaning setting on it? I unfortunately do not have a book (we rent) so have no clue how this works. Can anyone explain how long it will take? Do I need to wipe it out when done? etc? Also, how do I keep it clean so I don't have to do it again before we move (within 4-6 months).
any help would be great. thanks

I always, always always set off the smoke alarm when using a self cleaning oven!

Basically, you shut the oven lock it (if there is one) and set the setting to "clean". You will not be able to open the oven while its cleaning - as the basis of this whole process is it gets so super duper hot that it cooks everything off.
Once its done and cooled down a bit, you should be able to unlock it and wipe it down. Every oven I've had you've literally been unable to unlock it or open it while the cycle is running. You could google your oven make/model and see if you could get a copy of the manual online.
Mine usually took about 3-4 hours I believe. You will get residual heat, so you may not want to do it on a super hot day.~Jessica

Hide the dishes??? pfft... it's because of his wonky sink that you can't wash them

The oven reaches a temp close to 700*F, it may also get a little stinky... not like "oh gosh a skunk just died in there" but, metal heated higher than it ever has been...
I usually wipe my oven out HOURS after I cleaned it... I have a thing against roasting
I can't be out of money... I still have checks left!

I have a self cleaning oven, and it's the first I've ever had, so this may not be true for all ovens. I need to remove the racks before cleaning. It takes 5 hrs, and I like to do it on a cool day so I'm able to open the slider & window in my kitchen.
Mine doesn't beep when it's finished, but it does show how much longer is on the cycle on the clock part. I also need to clean the oven door by hand. Personally I'd rather use an oven cleaner and do it myself, but I hate the toxicity of the cleaners.
Once it's finished, you will need to wipe out the "ash" (not sure that's the right word) with paper towels or the like
I agree with Googling your oven. You may be able to find a manual online--I've done this with several of my appliances and have been able to print them out too
Oh and in case it helps, I have a GE profile oven (about 10 yrs old)

Make sure you take RACKS OUT!! It will cook the finish off of them if you do not. They will look all tarnished and stay that way forever.
I would do the oven cleaning on a rainy, cool day as it gets super hot when cleaning.
I would not leave a 700 degree oven going and leave the house. I would be afraid that the stove might start on fire. I also would not do it and then go to bed either. Just me though. I want to be able to see and smell if anything is going wrong.Debra

We did ours a few weeks ago and what I learned was take EVERYTHING off the top of the oven and around it. I ended up with 3 melted candels. One on the oven and 2 on the counters next to the oven. 2nd do not wait too long to sweep out the ash or it will leave like a film.
We had no smoke or odd smell when cleaning ours
