Moving
I decided to get a storage unit to put stuff into since me and my kids will be staying with my parents for 2-3 months. I can only take important papers, computer, clothes, and a few toys.
I have two desks, entertainment center, two large toyboxes, table and chairs, couple of outside toys, bikes, a big book shelf, microwave, washer and dryer, and a dresser. Everything else will be boxed up. The majority of stuff is toys which I have to go through.
I'm trying to plan ahead on the best way to put stuff in the storage unit. I was thinking of putting the big stuff to one side so I can access stuff in boxes if I needed things.
I will get the unit in the beginning of December so i'll have 2 1/2 weeks to move stuff.
Any tips to make this go smooth?

start packing now with boxes you pick up everytime you go to the store.

We recently did the same thing, but from MD to TN. My FIL got a storage shed to put on their property, it is cheaper than a storage unit monthly, and it will be his/ours/the whole families forever. We have easy access to our things if we need something, which is nice.
I packed a little weird, stuff we were going to use while staying here went into boxes just like everything else, but we put brightly colored stickers on those so we knew they came inside and not to storage.
We found it was easiest to get boxes from Grocery stores early in the morning, and out Walmart didn't have them until after 11, and allowed us to walk around the store and take what we wanted. The liquor stores didn't have boxes when we were moving (which are great for dishes and breakables) but we usually do well with them.
Good luck!

I'm jotting down these ideas. I have to remember to label all boxes also.

I forgot a few things, you didn't ask about them, but just in case you didn't think of them...
Change your address through the post office, if you can't use your parents address get a PO Box.
If you are leaving the state:
The bank we used in MD had no branches in TN - we had to change.
We made a notebook of our friends and my co-workers email, phone, address (whatever they chose to share) so we could stay in touch.
We kept some of our DD's clothes out to take to consignment once we arrived here.
If you have any questions or want to chat feel free to PM me.

Also can post on craigslist to ask for boxes. I had a ton in my basement and saw ad for them they came and took them all!

Get the smallest storage unit you need, maybe ask a friend if they have room in garage or basement instead.
Good luck!

I can post a want ad for free for my area so i'll do that.
I need to get a po box cause I don't want mail mixed in with my parents
I want to get the smallest storage as possible. My parents offered to put things in their shed and garage but I don't want things getting broke or my brother helping himself, etc
I'm trying to keep things where my parents will have nothing to complain about like taking up space and such

If you can find boxes all the same size then they will stack better in the storage unit.

I called the storage unit place, the size I need is $40 a month. I asked if I could get a discount if I paid 3 months ahead, should be all the time I need. So 3 months will cost me $100.
My dad is a tow truck driver and his boss is letting my dad use the flatbed to get my kids swingset. We can keep that at my parents until we have our own yard again.
My neighbor works at a grocery store. She'll bring me some boxes each time she goes to work.
I'm dreading going through all my stuff to pack itLast edited by mmy2grls; 11-18-2008 at 10:41 AM.

I've been getting egg boxes from the store and everything is fitting perfectly. I have been taking 3 boxes out to my parents to put in their shed at a time, giving stuff away on freecycle, I believe I won't get a storage unit.
Everything is going smoothly and I expect to have a lot of stuff in storage by next week.
We have a lot of snow here, my dad is using a flatbed(wrecker) from work to get the kids swingset first chance we get.
We're gonna get the big stuff out of here soon like furniture, I decided to keep the couch afterall.
My oldest and I decided we were camping out the last week we're here with just mattreses, tv, computer, and basic stuff.

I have a mini van that I won't be driving until March. Today I filled that up with my kids barbie house, toy boxes and stuffed toys into it, rest of our books, tricycle, and 3 boxes. Now my dad is going to haul it out to his house. This made a huge dent in things.
I put more things up on freecycle, hopefully that will be gone this weekend. I want to get most everything out of here this next week so we can chill.
