Spinoff thread - Going from single family home to condo

The thread on preparing to move from a condo to a single family home got me thinking - what about preparing to move out of a large family home into a smaller place?


Who here has downsized, and what was the experience like? Was it harder or easier than you thought it would be? What aspects have been positive, negative, and unexpected? What stuff have you been able to do without, and what difference has it made financially?

We never downsized long term, but I dream of it when cleaning bathrooms!

Two years ago, we relocated and stayed in a small apartment while waiting for our house to close. We had no belongings except for a suitcase each. It was for about a month, and it was awesome. There were five plates, five cups, just our basic needs. I spent so much time with the kids swimming and helping them get adjusted to their new surroundings.

That experience really made me think that all the extras in our lives can really be a hindrance to enjoying life.
