Curtains for small windows made out of pillowcases???
Ok...I am starting the slow process of redoing my 17 yr. sons room...we've been in our home almost 2 years now and I've put it off long enough.
He only has one small window in his room and I refuse to pay full price for curtains only to have to cut them off and hem them.
So...I was doing some thinking (yes, believe it or not~hehe) and wondered if anyone has ever made curtains from pillowcases???
I know that alot of people use flat sheets but I'm afraid that even with buying a dark color there will be too much light that will filter through into his bedroom *and* I hate to waste all of that extra material.
The sun rises on his side of the house.
Any ideas, or suggestions?? I would love input as far as choosing colors or even something that I could sew onto the edges or such in order to make them look a bit more "finished".
I'd really like to go with something that I could leave up for several years and that would go with about anything, as far as color wise.
I'm thinking of painting his walls either a dark taupe or the darkest 'eggshell' that I can find, if this helps?Michelle in middle Tennessee!

A pillow case could work or go to the fabric store and look in the remnant bin. You might get a heavier weight fabric for a really good price.

It's not going to filter light, will he have a blind too?? My Dmom made me an entire set of curtains and bed spread out of sheets as a child. We had shades though. You could buy the flat sheet and double it over to darken. Then use any extra for a pillow you made??? You should be able to get one for $10. and less on sale.

If the pillow case would work in size...what about using two compatible/contrasting color cases. ( preference ) Double for keeping light out and reversible for color scheme. Get tired of one..just reverse it.

If the window is the size I think it is, you could just sew a couple of seams on the long side of the pillowcase to make a rod pocket, and cut the area between the two seams open on the one side. You probably wouldn't need anything else with it since the fabric is doubled.

Thank-you all so much for taking the time to post you're helpful suggestions!
Yes, his window does have a shade, so that does help to filter out alot of the light, except of course down the edges.
I've not taken the exact measurements, which I will need to do of course. But I did try using a king size pillowcase the other day to see how well it would fit...sadly I still need approximately 4-5 more inches of fabric, so I'm thinking maybe just using a flat sheet, doubled, would be an easier and less expensive option.
Since it looks like I'll have to end up sewing either a contrasting material/pillowcase or some type of grossgrain ribbon to finish out the length.
I did spy some twin flat sheets for around $3.00-$5.00 the other day so I might just go take another look at those. Even by doubling them to make them a bit thicker, I don't think I would be able to go any cheaper.
Thanks again for all of the help...it gave me lots to consider and think about.Michelle in middle Tennessee!
