Default Closet Office **Updated with Picture**

Someone mentioned in another thread about a friend turning a closet into an office. I've been thinking about it ever since, and looking through pictures on the internet. Has anyone here ever done this, or have any ideas for me?

One of the bedrooms in the house we are buying is really tiny, but it has two closets. This will most likely be my son's room. The two closets are next to each other along one wall, when the bedroom door is open it blocks one of them. They are double sized with sliding doors (the doors where you can only have one half of the closet open at a time).

I'm thinking of using one of the closets to provide workspace for my son. I'm not sure if I should put a desk in one end and leave the doors on - so they could be closed to hide his mess - or take the doors off and make it more of a nook. I'm leaning towards doors off, because I don't want it to be dark and dreary but, it will be exposed all the time.

Does anyone have any ideas how I can arrange shelves and a work surface so that it looks like a little room, rather than just a closet with the door missing? He will need to keep books in there and his lego, as well as a table or desk for lego building and schoolwork.

Can you switch the doors out for standard doors? I would open up the space a bit more and still allow you to close them to hid the mess.

How do they get power in them? Run something from the light? what about phone/fax lines?

Oh, that was my friend that had done that! I think it's such a cool idea.

I think this one is neat, do a contrasting color inside and then a smaller desk and you still have storage on the side for legos and books and such. The only difference is that I would take the doors off.

My vote is nook. Can you install shelving across the top and as high as an adult can reach?

Do you have a pic of the two closets...this may help get better ideas.

    Default Update - It's done :)

Well, I am (sort of) finished with this project. It's kind of embarrassing that I only finished this today, considering it was such a small easy project and I started it back in October

The desk is made out of one of the doors that was taken off the closet. We just cut a few inches of the side and one end to make it fit. It is held up with 2x4 screwed into the wall underneath it.

I bought the floating shelf at Home Depot. I was planning to put up 2, but I ended up a little high with the first one and decided a second would be too far out of reach. I'm not sure if it looks too bare, but it is a small room so best not to look cluttered.

I still need to paint the desk (it's cream s/b white) and touch up the baseboard.

    I think it looks awesome.

Eventually, you might want to add a shelf or something across the entire top for out of the way storage, but it's beautiful as is. A simple bracket that a tote lip could slide onto, especially if the closet is much taller than the height of the door, where it would be out of sight could be another option.

But even if you don't do another thing to it, it looks wonderful! Great job.

As for the length of time, pffft who cares??? Just be glad it's done now and don't beat yourself up for the past.
