Default Is Your Kitchen Counter a Clutter Magnet?

    Mine is

A few things I do to keep the papers from piling on the counter:
    • Sort and throw out junk mail at the door
    • Keep two folders marked "pending" and "filing" to separate things that require action from things that just need to be kept
    • Keep all receipts in an envelope

What do you do to keep clutter from building up on your counter?

Your tips are what I do as well. I often get a pile of papers/folders on either side of my coffee maker. It's annoying, but a problem only I can fix.

    YES!!

I am very good about going through mail. Everything else covers every flat surface in my kitchen. I have a desk in my kitchen and I bought one of those tall shelf units with 5 trays and that helps with the paperwork.

My problem is my "kitchen" table. I have this problem with clipping recipes and to the right of where I sit is my pile of stuff. I go thru it and weed out some and it's a neat pile but a pile just the same. Do I get bonus points for not having a junk drawer?

Yep, it just sucks everything that can't be put somewhere else right to it.

Our kitchen is usually pretty clean. Papers and the like get dealt with quickly. There will occasionally be a kitchen towel or three laying around, but that's about it.

The desk is what seems to amass the things the rest of you are gathering.

Hm, nope I don't have this problem. The kitchen counter is associated with food prep in my brain and I feel like mail is dirty so it doesn't get to be there. A lot of stuff doesn't get to be in the kitchen because I think its dirty.

This would be my house. My family loves to dump things in the kitchen and I'm always cleaning it up or yelling for them to clean it up ASAP. lol

I have a desk organizer tucked into a corner that holds everything neatly. It's thin and vertical, so it has a really small footprint. Not much goes in there though. I try to do the whole 'touch it once' thing where you make a decision about everything you pick up. Bills get paid online and filed right away, and receipts get speared on spike file in the office.

I also charge my phone in that corner and I was able to hide the charge cord in one of these. I also found that keeping it and my notepad on a little glass chopping board helped make it seem less busy. The chopping board acts like a little rug and seems to unify everything.

I'm the bad one with papers in the kitchen. If I don't move them my husband will and then I won't find them!

Oh, gosh, I really have a problem with this, but it's not just paper. I have a wooden office tray on one end of the bar for DH's papers and another one on the desk/couch table for mine. The problem is more just other stuff not being put away. Dishes and pans that have come out of the dishwasher, groceries that haven't made it to the pantry, etc. A lot of it is the habits of being a "messy."
