My apartment smells like a bar
Neither DH or I smoke, but our apartment just reeks like cigarettes. I'm trying to pinpoint where the smell is coming from, and it's coming from somewhere near the bathroom/front door/storage room. I poked my head into the outside hallway to see if the smell was coming from there, but the hallway didn't smell nearly as bad as my apartment.
Today we're making a trip to the hardware store to see if they have any ideas on how we can keep the smell out. Maybe put some caulk along the baseboards or something I really have no idea. Its just so frustrating to finally get on a cleaning spurt and tidy everything exactly how I want it only to have this new problem

Just a thought, are you sure your DH doesn't smoke? I don't know your situation but I've known several people who quit, then started sneaking ciggies.
“When you get to the end of all the light you know
and it's time to step into the darkness of the unknown,
faith is knowing that one of two things will happen:
you will be given something solid to stand on,
or you will be taught how to fly.” - Edward Teller
“Our Earth is degenerate in these later days;
there are signs that the world is speedily
coming to an end;
bribery and corruption are common; children no
longer obey their parents;
every man wants to write a book and the
end of the world is evidently approaching.”
— From a translation of an inscription on
an Assyrian clay tablet, circa 2800 B.C.E.
God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,
courage to change the things I can,
and the wisdom to know the difference.

Are you real close to your neighbors - it would be easier to think of places where the smoke is coming from

My dau lived on the 2nd floor & the people below her smoked on their patio. Their patio was below her patio door & the smoke crept in. I had a friend in a 2nd floor apt in a house. The people below her smoked & she said she's sure it came thru the registers. Food for thought..........

I'll second what Ali suggested...the vents? When we lived in an apartment, we'd get all the neighbors cooking odors and other "interesting" smells.

Another odor-trapper is carpet. No matter how often you vacuum and shampoo it, you can never get it really clean. And the smells seem to stick in it forever.

We have no carpets at all, my suspects are the bathroom vent or seepage through the door. DH says he saw a lady walking down the hall with a lit cigarette yesterday, so maybe thats where the problem is from.

put a pan of vinigar on and simmer it for a few minutes. This with small amounts of bakeing soda set about the room for a few days may take care of it...the vinigar won't linger that long..I will often clean my coffee put with vinigar when the smoke smell starts getting bad. Your furniture is also a place that it stays for a long time. If you have just stopped smokeing and have some ashtrays left around you may want to wash them out with amonia too..They may look clean but still have the linger..When things got damp around my place is when I noticed it the most after I quit..

My grandmother "quit" smoking after having part of a lung removed due to lung cancer, but was sneaking them in the bathroom. She'd spray half a can of Lysol every time she went in the bathroom. None of us really put two and two together until she passed away from another occurence of the cancer. With one of the sources being the bathroom, I would hope your DH isn't smoking!
Otherwise, it could be the bathroom exhaust fan. Your pipes are likely tied to the ones of those around you and they may be smoking in their bathrooms. We used to clearly hear our downstairs neighbor wretching in the morning with his horrible smoker's cough.
