If you think they are germy, only use them once! I have a variety of sizes. I have a ton of white washcloths that are perfect for the "little messies" instead of a paper towel or full cloth.

I use washcloths, hand towels, bar mops. I have a ton of each type and they don't have to be washed immediately, just ensure you hang them to dry. So they are not seen by others, I choose to hang mine all around a bucket's edge under the sink. They dry and sometimes I choose to use them again (in most cases, I have one that is my Windex towel, I use it over and over most times, just rinse and dry inbetween each use, I also reuse dusting ones) or they can all be pushed into the bucket when dry to be taken down to the laundry room at the end of the week.

I do use paper towels for pet-sick situations, human-sick situations, but only because I haven't pushed through the grossness factor just yet. I'm working on it, one day I did use disposable gloves and cloths, but I was out of paper towels at the time and really don't want to repeat the experience yet.

I wouldn't buy paper towels at all but dh likes them. I rarely use them myself. I prefer dishcloths and cleaning rags and I do use several through the day and they go in the basket to be washed. I use white ones so I can use bleach to sanitize.

I went back to cloth rags a couple of years ago. I use cut up old towels for this. I just throw them in the wash when they get dirty. I use kleenex to pick up cat furballs left for me.

Have also stopped buying anti-bacteria soap. Only anti-bacteria soap I might have is because someone gave it to me. Just think it is healthy for me. I do use clorox once in a while but a solution of vinegar and water is just as sanitizing and less harsh to use.

I grew up when papertowels didn't exist. So we used rags. Then papertowels came around and that was all we used. I really enjoy not wondering when a good sale was coming around so I can afford papertowels. It really is a big money saver using rags instead.

Okay. I use staining pads...foam rubber sponges covered in terrycloth, I buy 'em 24 at a time from the local hardware store. I use two of these at a time...one is for "goopy" messes on the counters and the other for washing dishes. I replace them another set, dailly. I also use a cloth dish towel; it is replaced with a new one, daily.

We drain foods on b & w newspaper. I use rags to pick up messes not in the kitchen, depending on the mess one or many. I also recycle unscented cloth baby wipes (no baby)...they're washed and reused. If I have a mess that I think it "too messy" I use those and then toss them.

Most of the time, I use all purpose cleaner and the rags, which are then thrown into my "wet linen" bucket...and that's emptied at least once a week.

People have lived with germs since humans began, we're still here. That isn't to say that I think you should be sloppy, but consider that the people selling you the bleach, paper towels, paper cups, etc. are the ones who're telling you that the other stuff is "unsafe"!

I got rid of all paper in my kitchen a couple of years ago.
washcloths- first I do dishes then I wipe counters & table
    cloth napkins for eating
dish towel hangs next to sink for hand drying
I save ALL worn out undershirts, undies, socks, anything...I use these for gross clean ups and throw them away after.
