I'd like to live in a small place when we build our house. I just want to have a big root cellar and garage to store our preps
As a child, we were stationed in South Korea in the mid 90's. Base housing was an 860 sq foot apartment. The curved staircase was included in the sq footage. It was nice- we didn't have a bunch of clutter and we spent more time together as a family. We were a family of 4
I think a plus about having a smaller home is that you can spend more time/money on personalizing it and making sure it's built good.Wife to Air Force DH for 7 years.
SAHM to twin boys, Samuel and David!

~Here's a plan I sketched out today:

I started with a 199 square foot cottage plan I saw and loved on Cottage, cabin & small country home plans. It was a plan by Bart Cubbins which was an adaptation of a Ross Chapin design. Buildings under 200 sf
I added my own spin on it. Mine is 402.5 square feet. I made an oopsie when I did my plans and made my living room window seat bump out 3X7 instead of 2'6"X7 so that added 3.5' squared. and DH and I could live it in easily with plenty of room for guests.
The main living area and bedroom rectangles are 11X14 feet. I should have wrote all the dimensions on my page, whoops. Bart's plan has the dimensions.
Side walls are 10' high and the bedroom and bathroom have a ceiling height of 7.5' so the loft is roomier.
Anyway, just wanted to share my demented musings. I really find this stuff relaxing. Just thinking about having less to take care of makes me feel so much better. Some day!~~Constance

My house is about 900sq ft and its just my son and I who live there. Two bedroom, one bath. I would LOVE to have another toilet in the house. I have plumbing for a bathroom in the basement so maybe someday.
I like the size of my house. Its easy to clean, not alot of room for things I don't need yet I don't feel cramped at all.
As a single working mom, my house and yard are manageable. If it were any bigger I wouldn't be able to take care of it myself.Judy

I love this thread and the pictures of all of your cute cottages!
DH, DD and I live in a 1500 sf cape style farmhouse built in 1850. We have very steep stairs and when my daughter was born, DH moved our bedroom to the first floor so we wouldn't have to do stairs. It was just supposed to be for a few weeks but we've just stayed like this for 14 months. Last winter, we just shut the doors on the second floor and the door to the stairs and didn't heat the second floor and saved over $500. We like having the three of us snuggle in one room!
So we are down to about 800 feet, but even then we have a room we almost never use, so there is extra space!
I have a good friend that ownes a 4000 sf open concept mansion and honestly, I feel bad for all the work she has to keep it cleaned and heated. I wish she could sell it!
If I could afford it, I'd totally get one of those tiny homes for myself and retire there!
