I had that problem with a wall painted wall. Ended up having to paint over it.

If the grease is on wood try Murphy's oil soap. You should be able to clean it up well with that. It also cleans up crayon on wood surfaces.

What kind of grease/oil is it?

Mechanical - have you tried orange pumice handwash that mechanics use to wash their hands after working on greasy things? I've rubbed that into DH's jeans to get grease stains out and luckily for me it worked.

Food grease/oil - have you tried Dawn dishsoap?

Heat cured cooking grease is some of the toughest to get rid of!
For a natural alternative, have you tried baking soda or white vinegar?

Thanks guys I will try your suggestions, I'm thinking the orange pumice handwash may work on the walls as well.

I've had good grease-cutting results with windex.

I've used a strong vinegar water solution but recently I discovered Dawn Power Dissolver, for dishes. It cleans everything! Just spray on, let it set for a minute and it comes right off. I use it to clean my range hood where that dust and grease mixture is impossible to remove, works like a charm. I use it to clean my stove top too

Another suggestion: method all purpose spray cleaner - it really does cut grease/grime well w/o too much scrubbing (depending on what you're dealing with) and its an eco cleaner. But its not specifically a 'degreaser'
