Help with bathroom? Updated 3/1/03
One of my VERY UGLY rooms is the bathroom. The landlord said we could do whatever we wanted. The bathroom door opens into the kitchen, so the 2 rooms have to match somewhat. (you will see my VERY UGLY kithchen soon) I think dh and I agreed on white with blue accents. I guess if we had the same blue in both rooms we could paint the bathroom blue? He doesn't want the kitchen walls blue. I have some seashell things for the bathroom walls and a bible box full of small shells I've been saving for crafting.
WARNING: This is a photo of my full-time working, 2 kids and 2 cats house and the room is VERY UGLY!
This is the west wall. I do want some kind of "doors" on the shelves next to the medicine cabinet.

This is the UGLY north wall. The kitchen door is to your left, and the stool is to your right. I'm not sure I want to paint the paneling, though I'm sure it would brighten it up some.

Here is the east wall. My bil built the cabinet years ago when he lived here, those are leaves burnt in, and I don't think I want to change it.
The south wall is just the tub/shower. It just needs re-caulked. There is a wood trim border around it that matches the rest of the wood.

Hmm I would try a "white wash" over the brown paneling, and paint the top of the walls either white with blue accent steciling or paint them a country blue. Or if you want to have a "seashore" look for the shells you would like to use, you could do a nautical theme. (lighthouses, boats, etc)

I quite like it actually LOL.
I too would 'wash' the panels in either blue or white to open it up a bit and then paint the walls with the other colour.
As it's paneling I think the seaside look would really work well (that's why I want it in my front room) Anyway I like that look.
I've been making a book of scraps from decorating magazines for inspiration. I think your bathroom would look lovely - I LOVE that wood!

Make sure you use Kilz before you begin painting the paneling, or it will bleed through. Have you thought about using wallies in a Nautical Theme?

I think that I would paint the woodwork and paneling white, I'd also paint the shelf white; maybe paint the walls blue and put a wallpaper border or stenciling up at the wainscotting level. I'd also find some pretty fabric or lace fabric to make a little curtain for the shelf and use a matching fabric to make a shower curtain and window curtain if you have a window. And the sink top could probably be re-done fairly inexpensively with ceramic tile.

Oooooh, the gears are turning now! Thank you, ladies. I think I will start with a pale blue on the walls and a border at the wainscotting level. I see sailboats or lighthouses.
I'm trying to figure some way to hang a window over the shelves to hide them, then make some curtains for it and the tub/shower. The shelf would be cute in a kitchen for spices and knick knacks, but I don't have a place for it and would have to find a replacement.
Hmmmmm, any more ideas?

I was trying to talk to dh about this room this morning before I took ds to Karate. When we got home he had some of the paneling off the walls! Most of the wallpaper down! And plans!
We went to Kmart and found some stickers and border for the babies room, another we room want to do, but the line was a mile long and we didn't want to wait. I may go back another day. The paint would have been a good deal, but they wouldn't mix colors for us.

Just to let you all know, I painted my paneling and it turned out fine, It would have been so much better if I would have primered first. I did sand it pretty well tho. The paneling I painted was very old but it still had theat shiny feel and look to it. The best thing was after I painted it white, the hallway seemed about two feet wider, it made the room appear to be so much bigger. That wa not something I knew going in, but it helped.

How about painting the shelf in a soft sand color and using either wallies or stencils to put shells, sand dollars, etc.. on it? I've actually glued shells to frame a picture right on the wall in the past. If you have a Dollar Tree nearby, they usually always have little Nautical things, like Mini Life preservers, Ships Wheel, Light Houses, fishing nets, shells, sand. You could do so much with it.

Thanks Ellise!! We don't have a Dollar Tree, but I think I've seen those kinds of things at Big Lots. We're going to look at new medicine cabinets. This old house is probably an odd size though.

Karen, I think I have some wallpaper boarder left in Lighthouses if you'd like I could send it to you, Not much of it left but, you could always cut them out like wallies.

It's a wallpaper cut out. Pre-pasted so all you do is wet it, stick it, and smooth it.
They are really neat and come in a lot of different shapes, colors etc...
