Declutter the Top of Your Desk

Move staplers, tape dispensers, Wite-Out, and other small items off the desktop. You use them only once a week (if that), so don't give htem pride of place on your desktop. Try this instead. Hang a narrow shelf above or next to your desk. It should not be wide enough to hold books, or you'll be tempted to stack some there. Ideally, it should be the width of an ordinary knickknack shelf, no ore than 5 to 5 and 1/4 inches. That's the perfect size for holding a stapler, a tape dispenser, a pencil cup, even pictures of loved ones. They'll always be in easy reach, but they won't take up space you need to do your work.
