Have you tried watching Trading Spaces to see what not to do?

Target.com had some really pretty quilts for 19.99 for king size, cheaper for smaller (national Park Theme) with shams etc to go with it.. Not sure if they still have them, but if I was going to redecorate that is the way I would have gone.
I am not much of a decorator, our house is "current american hodge podge" with a few "accumulated antique" pieces.
Have fun!

My first suggestion is paint, it is amazing what painting a room a different color can make. If you are not in a hurry to redecorate shop your local thrift shops, garage sales and esate sales. I love antiques but can not afford the antique shop prices so I go every chance I can to estate sales and usually pick up more than antiques that I could really use cheaply. You night frame pretty magazine pictures, post cards, childrens or grandchilrens art work. We moved into this house and it was so much larger than all our others I was desperate for things to hang on the wall. So while visiting Grandma (and we all know that visiting Grandma means looking at pictures
) I found she had some really old b&w pictures of family members in cool old fashion dresses and suits etc. Grandmas was kind enough to give me some and I went to WM and bought some 2.50 frames and framed them. Grandma also had some newspaper clippings from family events several, several years ago that I framed with the coresponding person if I had that picture. You can buy those foamy stamps and stamp cool stuff around the windows or top of the wall for a border. Our General Dollar has border for 1.00 roll, some of it ain't bad either. You can stencil also. I have quilts on all of my beds instead of comforters, I love the country look. Baskets oh my you can pick them up so cheap nearly everywhere and they can hang from the ceiling or sit a bunch in the corner of a room with maybe some magazines, extra blankets, lotions, books, candies for your guest. Can you sew? if so you can make your own curtains, I made my kitchen curtains out of a tableclothe due to the fact I couldn't find what I liked though I knew I like the tablecloth and they are really cute. If you already have a comforter in there you could sew a duve (sp) cover for it instead of replacing it.
You can make lamps out of just about anything anymore with a light kit and the ability to drill holes. You can recover your old lampshade with fabric and spray adhesive then use cording along the top and bottom. If I might, you can visit HGTV.com for their trash to treasures program and decorating cents has alot of good ideas also. Good luck and post pics if you can when your done.

Can I add an idea I'm currently working on for my entry hall? AC Moore has wonderful shadow box frames-I have a lot of family memorabilia--my great grandparent's citizenship papers and their polish/english dictionary from 1920, a letter from the president recognizing dh's grandfather's military service and his purple heart, christening and communion certificates of great aunts and uncles, my grandparents wedding certificates etc. If your doing an antique room, this might work for you to-and it will be a great conversation piece.

Don't forget the power of some inexpensive plants. They make a room so warm and pretty.
