Question Need ideas for old socks....

I have an entire shopping bag (and I don't mean the little ones!!) full of old socks....
    not holey...
    not ripped...
just a little too stretched or a little too faded...
most of these are the black, wool, BDU socks...

I can't bring myself to part with them because I know there must be something that even I could do with them!!

    Any ideas, tips, suggestions?!

I wear mine here in the house. I'm such a fashion diva.

Me too Sara. No one sees them. Its funny because I noticed dh had two different pairs of socks on tonight. I said you have one dark blue and one black sock on. He looks and says No I don't. I told him to look again.

Debbie, the kids can also wear them around the house. My kids do all the time.

I used to have literally piles of unmatched socks. I tossed some, saved some hoping I'd either find the match or use it for cleaning or something, and finally decided hell, I'm just going to wear them.

I had the best of intentions of making sock puppets, but have not actually done it yet. lol

    !!! Sara - you're such a nut!!!!

I'd love to be able to wear these things, but living in El Paso where the mean temp is about 107° on a cool summer day, I'm thinking there's no need for socks on!!

The puppet thing is cute too but I can't imagine making one! I'm pretty trifling when it comes to cutsie!!

Maybe I'll just send them to the Noel household & they can wear them!!!

I can see the UPS truck pulling in the driveway with this gigantic crate. Fragile-Handle with care marked all over it.

I pry it open with a crowbar and find a lifetime supply of unmatched socks.

Maybe some of your pairs match some of mine?

LOL. well, i suppose if i had that many...I would take out my rotary cutter and mat and go to town slicing them up into thin thin strips, then using the thin strips to stuff a pillow with maybe? Or giving an old squished teddy bear some extra plumping?

oh, i do have a good use for one or two of em. I keep some mismatched socks for dusting. I turn them inside out so the terry is facing out, then i wear it as a mitt to dust with. Once they are so dirty i can't use em any more, I throw em out, there is inevitibly a stray sock ready to take it's place.

Ok- and old Mother Earth News book I own (circa 1970's) gave me ideas that I have incorportated into my lifestyle.

Cut mittens for kids out of the socks- embelish with buttons (robbed from ragged clothing of course), embroidery, ribbons, etc.

Use the ribbing for adding cuffs to kids shirts, making turtlenecks out of T-shirts, sew several cuffs together to make a kid's winter scarf and hat.

When my kids were younger, I used to beg for old socks from all my friends, family and co-workers.

My DH seems to be very hard on socks, so I always have a supply with the heels worn through. He doesn't like the feel of mended socks, so I found a way to use them before I throw them out.

He wears the over the calf, longer sock so I cut the toe off and cut the remaining tube in half. I cut these short tubes lenghtwise to make a square. Then I run them under some water, squeeze them out and stretch them over my old swiffer. I use these to clean my kitchen floor in between moppings. I can do the whole floor in just a few minutes, its been a real time saver for me this summer.

All I can picture in my head is Lambchop, that sock puppet that Sherry Lewis had for years.
