    Question soap slivers

I cleaned out the cabinet in my bathroom.  I've got a baggie full of soap slivers.  Has anyone ever melted these down to make a new bar...or maybe liquid soap?

Does anyone know how to do this?

I did this recently, without any instructions, though, but it worked. I put the slivers in a little glass Pyrex (heat proof) bowl. I added a small bit of water and then microwaved for a few seconds. That was enough to melt the soap and turn the water very soapy. I stirred it. Then I let it sit on the counter and harden. If you don't have/don't want to use a microwave, you could try just letting the soap melt naturally into the water. It would take longer though.

You just get them wet and soften the surface and then paste them together. As you use them, the slivers bind themselves in a glue of wet soap.

I don't bother saving a bunch, maybe my tip will help.

With the sliver of the last bar, I get the new bar wet in use, and press the old and new bars together, and the sliver usually sticks fine, if not I just get them wet and do it again the next time I use it.

One bar melds with the next in a never ending soapy chain of savings.

That's funny Margery. I do this now...in the kitchen. These are slivers from the bathroom that I just threw in a pot under the cabinet. I've sorted thru them a little, and there's a couple that are big enough to use as bars for a little while. We must not have liked them in the shower. It's been so long, I can't remember.

I did a google & found what you said, Valerie, about melting them. And plenty of people use them for soft soap in a dispenser or very diluted in a spray bottle for cleaning. I've got plenty of liquid soap and cleaners, so I'll wait a bit until I've used up what I've got....then I'll melt these.

One tip said to melt them in a mold & you'll get another bar after it dries a bit.....may try that if I can find some sort of thing to use as a mold. Wonder how long it'd take for it to harden enough again? Maybe I'll give that a shot.

I just let mine harden in the bowl and used a fork to pop it out. It took several hours, like maybe 10am until dinner time. Not sure.

I'm very sad because my dh threw away my new slivers! Only you would understand, but he thought he was being helpful and cleaning up.

Could we use icecube trays and make little chunks of soap? Or an old soap dish or travel soap dish? That'd work! I'd rather not have to buy a mold, but I'd like my soap to look nice. What about a glass dish?

Why not? I would just oil them before I used them, and dip them in warm water like you would a jello mold when ready to unmold.

I did read somewhere that the old ice cube trays with handles that you pull work better. I just wish I could remember where I saw it.
