    Dear Wendfly,

Maybe I can help. A comforter is a duvet. In the USA comforters are often purchased with a pattern. The duvet concept is not as popular as the comforter.

I am not sure why we have not completely adopted the duvet concept. I own both. Cotton comforters for the summer and down duvet/comforters with duvet covers for the winter.

    Hope this helps.

By the way I lived in Oxfordshire for one year from 2002-2003 and loved it. After two years in Japan I am now in Germany.

    LOL

Hi Heidiblue - thanks so much for replying. I love the word 'comforter' because it sounds so warm. Now I understand what one is .
Oxfordshire is lovely - beautiful scenery. We live in north Suffolk so just at the start of the Norfolk Broads. Very flat countryside but beautiful rivers

sorry just found this thread. Heidi is right.

Comforter is a big puffy duvet filled with fiberfill or polyester filling, that is much thicker than a quilt. Much like a synthetic sleeping bag unzipped. It is used without a cover, so it's not like a duvet that way. You put a top sheet on the bed, then the comforter. Or sheet, blanket and comforter if it's really cold.

They tend to pack down and get thin with age much as an old synthetic sleeping bag does.

For my climate they aren't warm enough in winter or cool enough in summer like the down duvet.

They are a decorative item, taking the place of a duvet cover or a coverlet as the top layer in the bed.

I have a duvet --down, made in Canada, with a cotton duvet cover that comes off for washing, and I have that sitting on top of the top sheet, and above it I throw a quilt on for pretty.
