Speaking of wallpaper, is this too dated?
We are having serious issues with about 1/4 of one wall in our dining room. Is it really "out" to put wallpaper on one wall and paint the other three? It isn't my first choice, but it is an option we are considering to deal with the mess on the one wall.
(I can't show you any pictures as my usb ports aren't working.)

I don't think it's a problem. People often paint one wall a different (complementary) color. You're going to paper all of the fourth wall, right, not just a portion of it? I think that's fine.

Yes, it would be the whole 4th wall. I'm not exactly sure what they did to it, but the wallpaper is NOT coming off that wall, no matter what we do. We had to steam and scrape the stuff off all the other walls, and it was a huge hassle, but it came off without any real damage to the walls underneat. However, around a doorway in the 4th wall, the paper is just not coming off without a lot of damage to the wall, which is made of something other than what the rest of the walls are. And we already scored all the paper, so it isn't even as if we can just paint over it.
Another option we've considered is putting a thin layer of plaster or spackle or whatever over that whole section then smoothing it in to the the res of the wall, then painting the whole thing. My concern with that, though, is that the textures won't match and it will be noticeable.

Kimber, when I watched the most recent English Changing Rooms the other day, they said wallpaper was hip again.

I think if you like it and you like the look of it, who cares if it is in or out. Decorate to please yourself, you are the one who has to live there and if it is pleasing to you and your DH that is all that matters.

They are all relatively smooth. They do have some "belmishes" in them, because DH wasn;t all that careful about removing the paper, but ther are all going to be sanded smooth.

I think it would be fine. Nate Berkus always says decorate the way you want in your home. He is right, your the one who has to live with it. If you don't like it, you can always change it at a later date.

They make a textured wall paper that you can paint over
we used that in my old house when the wall paper refused to come off of the wall in my son's room

As far as wallpaper removal, have you tried amy of the chemical solutions? When I moved into my house, I removed all the wallpaper. I'm glad there wasn't a lot of it. It was terrible to remove. Check out hgtv.com for wallpaper hints. Also, you might want to consider a faux paint finish. That might hide some of the blemishes. Also, if you go with a matte finish it won't show off all the blemishes like a semi-gloss or satin finish would show. I used Benjamin Moore paint and I've been very happy with it.

I am not a big fan of wallpaper, but my mom had for several years one wall in the living room wallpapered with the remaining walls painted and I really liked the look of it.
I think with one wall, the wallpaper isn't too overpowering.
But, I agree with the other posters, do what you want to do, since you are the one who has to live with it.

I would check out the home supply stores and ask them what to do. My sister lives in a 200 year old home and she has some type of smoothing paper over her plaster walls.
