    Default Another kitchen design question

I'm going to have an island in my kitchen, measuring 3ft x 4ft. I would like at least some of it to be lower than the 36" (3ft) that is typical of kitchen countertops. I think a lower work area is more ergonomically correct for a person of my height. Since I spend a fair amount of time cooking, cutting veggies, prepping foods for preservation, and kneading dough, I think it's a good idea.

    So here's my question. Would you make the whole island 33" tall or half (2ft x 3ft) 33" and the other half 36"? Or 3/4 (3ft x 3ft) 33" tall and 1/4 (1ft x 3ft) 36" tall?

The advantages to a bi-level surface are: increased storage beneath, better selection of cabinetry available at that height, and visual appeal/interest.

The advantages of a single, reduced-level surface are: larger continous work area, and adequate selection of cabinetry (probably lower priced than the specialty pieces available at the taller height).

BTW, we are going to move a wall, but not wall-off the utility room. Dh had a stroke of genius. I'll post drawings when I've firmed up a few of these other things.

I'd keep the work area all one height. 3x4 isn't that big of a space- you'll need space with all that you do.
Breaking up that space would look a little weird there in the middle of the floor. If that's where the island will be.
You can still have storage space- you just won't put that high of a kick plate on the bottom and maybe not have drawers on the island- that is -if you have plenty of drawers in other areas. I like that you're thinking ergonomically and getting it a size that is comforatble for the tasks. My counter space is too high -my kitchen table is too low.

If it were my island, I'd keep it all the same height. I'd measure what height was suitable for me and go for that.

Okay, thanks ladies. It is much simpler to keep it all one height.

Cheryl, are we the same height? My table is also too low (at 30") and my counters too high (one is currently at 37" & the other at the standard 36"). My island will be a perfect (for me ) 33".
