Do I really, really NEED 3 bathrobes?
I hit my closet this morning.
I decluttered two grocery bags full of clothes to donate. Three dresses; some shirts; (red!) velour sweats; a nice sweater that's too tight across my stomach; etc.
I love terry velour -- so soft and comfy.
But I didn't need THREE terry velour robes. So I donated one of them. (The least pretty one).

I had been using one of my dresser drawers for embroidered linens (bought on ebay) and small gifts. I boxed those up and put them on a closet shelf. I took the clothes from that shelf (spring tops) and put them into the drawer. Voila! Now the clothes are much more reachable.

I went through my purses. Kept them all, but did some rearranging:
Instead of EIGHT purses hanging from the hooks in my closet, there is now ONE. It's my go-to-town bag. A roomy leather Aigner, bought for $2 at the thrift store.
The others got distributed as follows:
* 5 purses got put onto a closet shelf (2 Brightons, 1 Tignanello, 1 Coach, and 1 no-name soft leather purse). I bought them all 2nd hand, but they are too nice to give up, yet. And I can justify them -- the Tignanello is a small black purse, useful for formal events. The no-name is a great roomy purse to take on vacation. The Brightons go with a lot. And the basic black Coach ... is a Coach.
* The Toby Weston tapestry purse got promoted to a knitting bag.
* The Travelone got put with luggage.
******************************************
I have a lot of clothes that I don't love, but that I might need...someday.
Like a long black skirt ... in lightweight fabric, bought when I needed to go to a party in Texas ... in July. I don't love it. I don't want it. But I know these relatives -- and they LOVE parties. So, until I find something better, it stays.
And a black dress. 2 black blouses. Someday I'll need a black dress or blouse for a funeral. But they weren't doing anything to enhance my life hanging there in my closet. And these are my size .... found at a good price.
If I'd lose a size, I'd get rid of them. But sometimes clothes-that-fit are hard to find in sz 20w.
I boxed them up and put them on a shelf.
**********************************************
My regular clothes can breathe so much better now!
***********************************************
p.s. re-reading this, I see a trend: If it's high quality, I hate to get rid of it. And I absolutely resent buying expensive clothes to go to a must-attend function.
Buying relatively expensive clothes for everyday (like Lands' End mocs and LL Bean knit skirts) doesn't bother me nearly as much.

That is a lot of hard work, and congratulations on the space you just liberated for yourself in your life and your closet. And on the donations. Somebody will truly enjoy the bathrobe etc.
